In the present foundry practice it is quite common that when the cope is withdrawn from the-drag, it is discovered thata clean parting'has not been made and also that the mold does not truly represent the-pattern in shape, due to the distortion resulting from the'usual methods-of loosening the pattern in themold. I contemplateby my invention applying a vibrating force directlyuto the pattern whilein the mold fso thatthe pat tern itself will be vibrated, effectually free the mold sand-therefrom and at the same time producing a minimum' distortion of themo'ld from the true shape of the pattern. I also contemplate the provision'of a vibrat ingqdevicewhi'ch may be used as 'a drawing iron to drawythec pattern from the mold. The pattern or i'appingFpIate 19 is provided with openings 22 in itsside po'rtions, by which it may be secured to thepattern and with a socket 23 to receive=the tapered end 20 of the shank. The walls of this socket are provided with bayonet slots 24, directed axially and then peripherally of the socket, whereby the pins 21 may be inserted into these slots and then by giving the shank 18 a partial turn a secure but readily detachable connection is made with the rapping plate 19, which in turn is, of course, secured rigidly to the pattern.
As shown in Fig. 2, the frame 10 is offset from the shank 18 as at 25, to permit the stem 26 of a separate draw rod to be inserted through the bore of the tubular stem 18. The stem of the draw rod is provided with a lower threaded end 27 and with a handle 28 at its upper end having a notched or recessed portion 29 for connection with a crane hook, or the like. The stem may be connected with the handle by being threaded in an opening therein, and a cotter pin 28 may be inserted through the upper end of the stem to prevent the handle becoming detached. The pattern plate 19 may be provided with a threaded opening 23 below the socket 23 to receive the threaded end 27 of the stem 26.
The operation and use of my device will now be described with reference to Fig. 2, in which is shown a flask having a drag A and a cope B, the flask being filled with sand in readiness to have the cope withdrawn from the drag.
It will be understood that when the cope is ready to be placed upon the drag, a wooden dummy plug of substantially the same shape and size as the shank 18 will be inserted in the plate 19, secured to the pattern, this plug having a nail or like member driven through the end thereof to enter the grooves 24, as has already been explained in connection with the lugs or pins 21. The cope is then rammed up with the dummy plug in place, and the sand packed tightly around the pattern.
The dummy plug is then withdrawn and the shank 18 inserted in its place, the lower end of the shanlz entering the socket 23, and the pins 21 making secure connection in the slots or grooves 24. Compressed air is now admitted by the valve 17 to the vibrator 12, and the pattern is vibrated to loosen it in the mold so as to enable the cope and the pattern to be withdrawn. It will be apparent that the vibrations are transmitted directly to the pattern itself and not effected upon the parts of the flask. This will result in the freeing of the pattern with the least possible distortion of the mold and will result in a more intimate packing of the sand about the pattern. It will also free the pattern from the sand more effectively than if the rapping is done upon the parts of the flask.
The rapping device is then given a partial turn to detach it from the pattern and it is withdrawn from the cope so that the latter may be drawn from the flask. The shank 18 may then be connected again to the rapping plate 19 secured to the pattern, and the latter vibrated to an additional extent if desired or necessary. The pattern may then be withdrawn from the drag either by means of the separate draw rod inserted into the tubular shank 18 and having its lower end threaded into the plate 19, or by The result will be that a clean draw will be effected, both of the cope from the drag and of the pattern also, so that the castings made by the molds will be closer to actual size and shape of the pattern and will contain no fins which Will have to be chipped ofl? before use.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings I have shown a modified form of my invention wherein the rapping device is provided with a tubular shank 80, having a tapered end 31 from which project the pins or lugs 32. Secured to or made integral with the shank 30 is a lug 33, to which the vibrator 34 is secured. Through the bore of the tubular shank 30 is passed the stem 35 of a draw rod, the stem having a lower threaded end 35, and is secured at its upper end to a handle 36 having a recessed or eye portion 37, for connection with a crane hook or the like. It will be understood that this stem 35 and also the stem 26 of the draw rod shown in Fig. 1, are freely turnable within the tubular shanks 18 and 30, so that the draw rods may be threaded into the plates 19.
The tapered end 31 of the shank 30 is designed to enter the socket 23 of a vibrator plate 19, as has already been described in connection with the tapered end 20 of the shank 18. In some cases where the pattern is relatively small and of light weight, there is a possibility of its being slightly tipped by the rapping device shown in Fig. 3, owing to the fact that the weight of the vibrator is not directly over the point of connection with the pattern. This disadvantage is elimmated by that form of my device shown in Fig. 1, wherein the center of mass of the vibrator is substantially over the point of connection with the pattern. However, in many instances, the patterns are sufliciently heavy so that either form of my device may be used with extremely advantageous results.

so as to have its lower end threaded into a pattern plate 19, secured in reverse posIit will be seen, therefore, that when the pattern is drawn the pull may be exerted upon the lower side thereof, which will obviate any tendency to pull the pattern apart as would be the case if the draw rod were connected to the upper face.
In Fig. 6 of the drawings I have shown one form of my device in use with a relatively large pattern 40, being drawn from the drag 41 by means of a crane hook or the like 42, attached to the handle 36. In this instance, the crane will, of course, be secured to the hook 42 and the drawing operation may take place coincident with the rapping of the pattern by the vibrator.
It will be understood that in the case of ,he modification shown in Fig. 1 of the drawwill, in this case, be threaded into the threads 23 of the pattern plate. In the case of the device shown in Fig. 3, the drawing will usually be done by means of the rod 35, having the grip 36 thereon, the lugs 32 serving to connect the vibrator with the pattern plate for the rapping operations.
While I have shown and described some preferred embodiments of my invention, it is understood that it is not to be limited to all of the details shown, but is'capable of modification and variation within the spirit of the invention and within the scope ofthe appended claims.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A rapping device comprising a shank portion adapted to be attached to a pattern and means slidably associated with said I shank portion by which a lifting force may be applied.
'3. A rapping device comprising a handle portion having spaced sides, a shank extending downwardly therefrom for connection with a pattern, and a vibrator secured to the spaced sides of the handle portion.
, 4. A rapping device comprising a vibrator supporting member, a vibrator secured thereto, a shank portion extending downwardly from said supporting member and adaptedto be connected to a pattern plate, and .a draw rod 'movably associated with said shank.
5. A rapping device comprising a vibrator supporting member, a vibrator secured thereto, a shank portion extending downwardly from said supporting member, a socketed plate adapted to be secured to a pattern, said shank portion having a tapered end designed to enter said socket and be detachably secured thereto and a draw rod adapted to enter said socket and be connected to said plate.
6. A rapping and drawing device comprising a tubular shank portion adapted to be secured to a pattern, a vibrator rigidly secured to said shank portion, and a draw rod insertable into the bore of said shank and having means at its lower end for connection with the pattern.
7. In a rapping and drawing device, a tubular shank portion adapted to be secured to a pattern, a vibrator rigid with said shank portion, and a draw rod insertable into the bore of said shank and having means atits lower end for connection with the pattern, and means at the upper end by which a lifting force may be applied.
8. A rapping and drawing device comprising a tubular shank portion and a vibrator rigid therewith, a draw rod adapted to be inserted through the bore of said shank, a plate adapted to be secured to a pattern and means on said plate whereby it may be connected either with the draw rod or the shank. A rapping device comprising a shank portionadapted to extend through an opening inthe; cope of a flask and be connected with the pattern, a vibrator to shake said shank portion, and means extending through the said opening in the co e andconnectible with the pattern and aving means by which a lifting force may be applied to draw the pattern from the flask simultaneously with the rapping of the pattern.
