ROBERT v. JENKS, 0F PATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENERS FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,680, dated March 14, 1876 application filed February 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT V. JENKs, of Paterson, iirthe county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for the Meeting-Rails of Window-Sashes; and [do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fastehers for the meeting-rails of windowsashes. It consists in a pivoted locking-plate attached to the outer or hooked end of, and so arranged as to automatically lock, thecatcharm as the latter is turned outward from the sash-rail, to which itis pivoted, by dropping into a notch in the rim or periphery of the semicircular segment or retainingplate secured to the meeting-rail of the opposite sash, which will be hereinafter more fully explained and definitely claimed.
In the drawings, Figure'l represents a per;
spective view; Fig. 2, a cross-section; and
-Fig. 3 a detail view of part 'of the fastener,
constructed according to my invention.
a and to represent portions of the meetingrails of the upper and lower sashes, with my invention applied thereto. bis a hollow bearing secured to the upper edge of the rail a. In it is placed the retaining-spring b and between its upper and lower plates 12 b is pivoted the catch-arm c, the opposite end of which is curved upward at 0 so as to allow of the free passage of the catch 0 over the semic'ular retaining-piece d,'which, at its outer edge, is provided with a raised projecting rim, d leaving a channel, d between the rim d and the sash a, to which the piece 01 is secured. The lower forward end 0 of the catch-arm c is provided with a hooked portion, 0 adapted to extend under the rim d and run in the channel 01 when the catoharm c is turned into the position shown in the drawings. To the forward end of the catch-arm c is pivoted a locking-plate, e, the rear face of the lower end 6 of which is adapted to be received within a notch or recess, 61*, formed in the rim d of the retainingpiece (1, when the catch-arm c is turned into position to lock the windo w-sashes, as shown in the drawings, Fig. 2. The outer edge e of the locking-plate e is provided with a serra'ted,'notched, or roughened edge at e to. facilitate the turning of the lockingplate e on its pivot 0 when it is desired to raise the lower end out of the notch (1 so that the catcharm 0 may be thrown back against the bear ing b, in order to permit the sashes to he opened. f is a stop on the catch-arm 0, which prevents the locking-plate 6 being turned so far back that it will not hang by its own weight in position to lock the catch 0 when pressure is removed from the plate 0.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat cut, is-
The catch-arm c, pivoted locking-plate e, and retaining-plate 61, provided with the notch 61 in its periphery, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT V. JENKS. Witnesses:
