C. W. POSPISIL PORTABLE HAND SLICER AND CUTTER Filed July 22, 1926 5 Sheets-Sheet 5 Patented Feb. 11, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CHARLES W. POSIPISIL, OF FULLERTON, CALIFORNIA PORTABLE HAND SLICER AND CUTTER Application filed July 22,
such as will become apparent as the description progresses, in view, the invention has been embodied in one operative form as illustrated in accompanying drawings.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine; Figure 2 is a side elevation reverse to Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a plan view;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1 showing the gear drive for the cutter blade disk;
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Figure 3 showing the thickness gage used in connection with the cutting member; 1
Figure 6 is an end elevation;
Figure 7 is a frontelevation;
Figure 8 is a transverse sectional view through the machine showing the same supported on the base or rest, and
Figure 9 is a perspective view of said base or rest.
Referring specifically to the drawings, a suitable form of supporting frame is provided as at 10 which may have a horizontal bed or plate 11 with a cutter-mounting wall 12 rising therefrom. Also, said frame has spaced parallel runners 13 depending therefrom. Axles 14, for instance in the form of bolts, may be removably passed through the runners 13 and support wheels 15, adapted to rest on a bench, table or the like to reduce friction when the machine is operated.
If preferred, the rollers 15 may be dispensed with by removing the axles or bolts 1926. SeriaLNo. 124,238.
14, and the device slid along a base or rest 16, preferably stationarily fastened to a bench or table, and having grooves as at 17 slidingly fitted by the runners 13.
The cutter or knife is shown in the form of a disk or blade 18, preferably slightly dished as shown, and sharpened at its periphery. The disk or blade. 18 extends below the surface of the bed or plate 11. Said disk is detachably carried on a short transverse shaft 19. To this end, shaft 19 has a squared portion on which a collar 20 is detachably secured and which collar has a plurality of lugs or pins 21 extending therefrom and r'emovably into openings 22 in the disk or blade 18. A nut or other fastening 23 prevents detachment of the plate or collar 20from the shaft 19. Said shaft 19 in turn is journaled and mounted against displacementin a subhousing 24 carried by the wall 12 and extending from a housing 25 also carried by said wall 12. Disposed longitudinally of the housing 25 is a drive shaft 26 which carries a worm 27 within the housing and which meshes with a worm wheel 28 within housing 24 and keyed to the shaft 19. The shaft 19 is accurately fitted through the use of various thrustwashers as at 29. V
Said wall 12 hasan offset portion as at 30, 1 1 having a hole 31 therethrough whereby a hand grip or handle is afforded. The wall 30 is extended and supports an electric motor 31' which drives the saidshaft 26 and which receives its current from any suitable source.
A roller 33, is journaled on a suitable pin or shaft 34 carried by wall 12, and engages the cutter or disk 18 in such manner as holds the same from drawing in or becoming distorted. Such roller 33 is preferably made oft compressed or indurated fiber.
On the side of cutter or disk 18 opposite to the roller 33 is a slide adjuster in the form of a plate 35 having an elongated slot 36 laterally thereof and through which a bolt 37" passes and which is threaded to the plate 11. The advantage of the slide adjuster is to make the slicing or cutting easier through close adjustment against the knife.
A slice adjuster plate is employed as at 40 and has a depending block 41 occupying a 10 slot 42, laterally enlarged with respect to the same, and formed in the plate 11. A bridge 43 extends across the slot and an adjusting screw rod 44 is journaled in said bridge and has threads at 45 engaging threads in the block or dependent 41. A hand wheel 46 is provided to facilitate manipulation. Thus through adjustment of the rod 44, the thickness adjuster or gage plate may be moved closer to or farther away from the plane of the cutter 18, to thus regulate the. thickness of the slice since the material is held against the plate 40 with the left hand while the op erator slides the machine with the right hand, engaging the same at thehandle 30.
The machine is preferably cut away as at on the discharge side thereofto facilitate the escape of cut material.
It is to be understood that the machine may be made in various sizes and that no limitation is to be implied as to the material or materials which may be sliced or cut since such divergent materials have been cut as meat and cheese,- andwall paper, the latter being for the-purpose of trimming.
Attention is called to 171' e. fact that. the housings or boXings 24 and 25 are in separable sections suitably held together so that the various parts may be applied-,inspected or repaired.
Various changes may be resorted to pro vided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
35 A machine of the class described comprising a movable frame having a wall rising therefrom, a means extending from the frame and disposed laterally thereof engageable by the hand to facilitate reciprocation of the frame, the latter means having an upward and forward extension, a motor fastened to said extension, casings secured to said wall, driving shafts and gearing in said casings, a cutter on one of said shafts, a slide adj uster movable relatively to the cutter, a screw on said plate threaded to said slide adjuster and operable to vary the-position; thereof and runner members, said slide being adjustably supported on one ofthe runner members.
In testimony whereof I- afiix my signature.
CHARLES W. POSPISIL.
