((UUNIIIDDDYII CLAUDE E. GABRIO, OF MADISON, WISCONSIN.
VEGETABLE-PARING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
atented Dec. 13, 1921.
Application filed August 10, 1920. Serial No. 402.522.
To (17.7 l i/om. if only concern 7 3c it known that I. (LAinn E. (homo, a citizen of the I'nited States. residing at Madison. in the county of Dane and State of \Yisconsin. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Vegetable-Faring Machine. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vegetable paring machines. and more particularly to an improved apparatus for mechanically paring potatoes or similar vegetables from which the exterior is to be removed.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an apparatus for holding and rotating the vegetables simultaneously with the engagement of a cutting knife whereby the exterior of the vegetable is removed while rotating.
Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus which may be adjusted to receive and pare vegetables of different sizes and shapes.
Other objects of the invention will appear upon consideration of the following detail description and accompanying drawings. wherein Figure 1 is a plan view.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section,
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken through the cutting element.
Fig. l is a transverse section through the headstock.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section through the driving mechanism. and
Figs. (3. T. and 8 are detailed views of the cutting member.
Referring to the drawing by numerals. the base 1 comprises a rectangular supporting frame having the legs 2 and a horizontal bed plate 3 the latter being provided with a longitudinal central opening 4. At one end of the bed plate are mounted the standards 5 which support a shaft 6 upon which a drive gear T is mounted. These standards also have fixed thereto in any preferred manner a housing 8 which incloses the drive gear 7. A hand crank 9 is provided on one end of the shaft 6 whereby the gear 7 may be manually operated. The opposite end of the shaft 6 carries a tool 10 which comprises a disk 11 from which longitudinal prongs 1:2 extend.
longitudinal shaft 13. screw threaded throughout its entire length. is disposed beneath the bed plate 3 and has its end journaled in suitable bearings 11 whereby the shaft may be readily rotated. Mounted on the shaft 13 is a pinion 15 in mesh with the gear 7 so that when the hand crank 9 is actuated the screw threaded shaft 13 will also be actuated.
The head stock 16 is mounted at the end of the bed plate opposite to the standards 5 and supports a cylindrical head 17 having a hollow interior closed at one end by a removable cap 18. A slidable head 19 is mounted in the interior of the member 17 and forms a tool head to receive the tool element .20 which is of the same construction as the member 1 and comprises a disk 21 equipped with a stem 2:! lodged in a recess in the tool head it). The prongs :23 project toward the prongs 12 of the tool member 10 and these two tool members are intended to hold the vegetable in the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The tool head 19 is provided with a longitudinal groove 21 to receive one end of a set screw 25 whereby longitudinal adjustment of the tool :20 may be had. An expansion spring '26 is interposed between the cap 18 and one endof the tool head 19 to force the tool :20 into engagement with the vegetable.
The head stock is held on the bed plate by. a clamp element shown in detail in Fig. 1 in a manner that will permit longitudinal adjustment of the head stock 16. A projecting portion of the head stock is disposed within the longitudinal opening *1 to insure rigidity and to properly guide the head stock when it is longitudinally adjusted.
A clamp screw :27 is engaged with a clamp plate 28 and a nut .29 provided with a handle so is mounted on the clamp screw so that the clamp member QR may be tightly drawn into engagement with the bottom of the bed plate to hold the head stock in adjusted position.
At opposite longitudinal edges of the bedplate are the rails 31 which provide tracks to receive the wheels or rollers 32 of the carriage &3 which extends across the bed plate side of the carriage 33. The locking pin 37 may be thrust downwardly through its opening to engage one edge of the carriage whereby it may be held in position at one side of the device when not in use.
The tool supportmounted on the cutter head 36 comprises a standard 40 within which is mounted a tool stem 41 having its upper end provided with a transversely extending portion 42 through which transverse openings extend. The tool holder comprises a pair of arms 43 provided with the elbows ll whereby a portion of the arms are offset and the ott'set portions are engaged with the cutter blade 45 shown in detail in Fig. 8. Set screws 46 are provided to fix the arms 4 in proper position after the blade has been adjusted.
In order that the carriage may be longitudinally moved during the cutting operation. the screw threaded shaft 13 is pro vided with a sleeve l7 which has interior screw threads engaged with the threads on the shaft 13 and is also provided with an upstanding arm l8 rigidly connected with a shaft 49 extending beneath the upper portion of the carriage 33. It will be noted that the sleeve t7 is shaped so as to engage and disengage the shaft 13 by moving the shaft i9 and the sleeve is normally held in engagement with the threads on the shaft 13 by an expansion spring 50 which engages acollar on the shaft 49.
In operation, the vegetable is held by the tool elements 10 and 12 and is rapidly rotated as the crank 9 is turned. The locking pin 37 is then released so that the tool or cutter member 45 engages the potato or vegetable as in Fig. 3. and since the same turns in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3 it will be obvious that the cutting edge will remove the exterior of the vegetable. since the spring 38 draws the cutting knife into engagement with the surface as the carriage is longitudinally moved.
It will be obvious that minor changes may be made in the. details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a bed plate, and a rotary vegetable holder, means to actuate the vegetable holder, a transverse movable carriage on the bed plate. a movable cutter head on the carriage, a cutter carried by the cutter head, means associated with the vegetable rotating means to longitudinally move the carriage whereby the cutter may move longitudinally with respect to the vegetable in the vegetable holder. and means associated with the movable cutter to normally hold the cutter in engagement with the vegetable.
2. The combination with a bed plate, means to rotatahlv hold a vegetable. a -arriage movable on the bed plate. a cutter head mo able on the carriage transversely of the bed plate. spring means to draw the cutter elements into engagement with the vegetable carried by the vegetable holders. and means to manually actuate the carriage and vegetable holders.
3. The combination with a bed plate. and a rotary vegetable holder, means to actuate the vegetable holder, rails along the longitudinal edges of the bed plate. a carriage movable along the rails. transverse rails carried by the carriage, a second carriage movable transversely across the first mentioned carriage, a cutter mounted on the second carriage. and spring means associated with the second carriage to normally hold the cutter into engagement with the vegetable.
In testimony whereof, I have afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CLAUDE E. GABRIO. Witnesses JACOB H. BILL, FRED H. HEIN.
