Description

Feb: 11, 1930. J. S 'OCH A wm'now FASTENER Filed May 31. 192 7 Patented Feb. 11, 1930 T ()FFI JOHN SOGHA, OF SYRACUSE, NEWYORK WINDOW FASTENER Application filed May 31,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fastening devices for w1ndows, and aims to provide a highlynovel, simple and inexpensive device comprising a certain structural element adapted for attachment to a pair of sliding sashesto permit the same to be securely fastened in fully closed or any other predetermined open po sition.
In carrying out my invention there is provided a pair of units, one of which is constructed for attachment to the front face of the upper sliding sash frame, the other unit being constructed for attachment to the 1.3 upper bar of the lower sash frame, sa1d un1ts being associated whereby they may be 1nterlocked in various positions so that as previously stated, the sashes may be secured in predetermined open or fully closed position. so One of the most important Ob]6Cl3S of the invention is to provide a fastener of this character that may be readily associated with the sash frame without materially alter1ng the construction thereof, and without obstructing 9:, the normal raising and lowering of the sashes.
In the drawing wherein like reference terconnected to maintain the lower sash in partially raised position.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary horizontal section through the upper sash disclosing the upper end of the lower sash to top plan, and
4o said sashes being equipped with the elements of the invention.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the amt rlgidly associated with the upper end of the lower sash. I
Figure 4 is a top plan view of a plate memanchored to the between the abutments and the 1927. Serial No. 195,352.
her that is and a r Figure 5 is a plan view of the movable fastening member of said unit.
Now having particular reference to the drawing, A designates fragmentarily a window frame, while B and C indicate the upper and lower sliding sashes respectively. Rigidly secured to the inner face of the frame of the upper sliding sash B, and adjacent one side of the window frame A is a vertically extending elongated metallic plate 5, the lower endof'which is provided with an inwardly extending right angular lug 6 for engagement within a cut out portion in the lower bar of the frame of the upper sash B. The outer face of this member 5 is formed with pairs of spaced fingers 6', the fingersof each pair converging toward each otheras clearly indicated in Figure l and having slight spaced relation as disclosed. The invention further consistsof a narrow plate 7 having "openings 8-8 at its opposite ends, and which plate is adapted to be disposed upon the top side of the frame of the sash, the openings 8-8 being provided to permit the plate to be screwed or otherwise suitably sash frame, see Figure 2. This plate 7 is formed centrally with a raised and circular portion 9 that is formed at the side adjacent the member 5 of the upper sash with a notch 10. Furthermore, the center of the raised circular portion 9, is formed with an opening 11. r i
Disposed upon the top of the raised circular portion 9 of the said plate 7 is a substan tially circular plate 12 also formed'centrally with an opening through which and through the opening 11 in the raised circular portion 9 of the plate 7 is arranged a pivot pin 13. The lower end of this pin is provided with an abutment 14, while surrounding the pin center of the raised portion 8 of the sash attaching plate 7 is an expansible coil spring for "causing an essential feature of said unit,
the frictional binding of the rotary plate 12 against said raised circular portion of the plate 7.
The edge of the movable plate 12 is formed throughout a portion of its area with a flange 16 that extends above and below said plate, as clearly indicated in Figures 1 and 4. One end of this flange terminates in a tangential extension to provide a turning handle 19 for said plate. At the opposite end of the flange 16 said plate 12 is formed with a notch 20 for registry with the notch 10 of the raised circular portion 9 of the attaching plate 7 so that when said notches are in registration the sashes may be raised and lowered without the plate 12 encountering the pairs of fingers 6 of the upper sash attached to member 5'. However, when the sashes are raised or lowered to a predetermined point, that is to a point whereby the turning plate 12 is directly between a pair of the fingers 6-6, a movement of the handle 19 in an inward direction will causethefiange 16 of said plate to engage between the adjacent pair of fingers 6' for obviously securing the sashes in such position.
In order to maintain the plate'12 against accidental turning movement when in secured or unlocked position, the said plate is provided on its bottom side with a pair of spaced notches 2121 for receiving a tit 22 at the top surface of the raised circular portion 9 of the sash attaching plate 7, the notches 21-21 obviously forcibly receive, the tit 22 by reason of the spring pivotal connection between the sash attached member and said securing plate 12. t
In order that the upper and lower sashes may be moved without the units of the present fastener encountering each other, the backside of the frame of the lower sash C in registration with the notch 10 of the raised portion of'the anchoring plate 7 is slotted asat c and through which slot the fingers of the upper sashpl'ate 5 are freely movable.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a highly novel, simple and inexpensive window fastening device that is well adapted for all the purposesheretofore designated and even though I have herein, shown and described the invention as consisting of certain detail structural elements, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changeszmay be made therein without affecting. the spiritandrscope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters'Patent is In a sliding window sash fastening means wherein one of the sashes is formed with a vertically disposed channel, an elongated plate secured in vertical position on the opposed-sash and adapted to ride in the; channel of the opposed sash when the latter is moved, a rotary member mounted at the inner end of the said latter sash adjacent to the outer end of the said channel, the edge portion of the said member adapted to overlie said end of the channel, said member being formed with a notch in its edge portion registerable with the open end of the channel, when the member is rotated to a certain predetermined position, and pairs of spaced lugs on said plate for engagement by said member when the sashes are adjusted inwardly with respect to each other.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN SOCHA.
