M. GRBELL AND FASTENER FOR COVERS 0R LIDS DEMOUNTABLE HINGE Filed NQv. 9. 1925 Patented Jan. 28, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT ori-lcs MAX GARBELI., oF CHICAGO, ILLIIIoIs, AssIGnozaro vIc'roa ADDING MACHINE corr- PANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,
A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS :DEMOUNTABLE HINGE AND FASTNER roncovnns` on Lins- Application filed November This invention relates to carrying devices or cases for typewriting machines, but has particular relation to means for demountably hinging and fastening the covers thereof to their bases, and it consistsin certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement and combination of the various parts thereof las will be hereinafter more fully set forth and lspecifically claimed. Y
The principal" object of the invention is .to provide avery simple and inexpensive device to be used on the covers and bases on which basestypewriting machines may beinounted for securely holding said parts together, but which will permit them to be readily de sitions they will occupy when thepartsof the case are Vfastened together.
Fig. 2, is a view in elevation of the rear wall of the casing, showing it fore-shortened for the convenience of'illustration, and equipped with my improvements. o
Figs. 3 to 5, inclusive, are detached perspective views of details of the invention.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout theV different views of 4o i' the drawing.
Referring. now to ence numeral 6 designatesthe inverted box'- like portion of a carrying case for" 'type- V writers which portion has its lowerfendopen in which the base ,7 of the case snugly fits. Upon this base 7 may be mounted in the usual or any preferred, wayatypewriting machine (not shown) Vfor which the function of the case is tolsupport and carry such a machine,
To the rear end of the lower surface ofthe the drawings, the refer-y 9, 1925. Serial No. 68,041.
base 7, is secured in spaced relation to one Y another apair of l'angle brackets, designated as awhOle,v by the lnumeral 8, each of which consists of a base portion 9, and an upright part 10. The upright portion of'each ofthe brackets is provided with a vertically disposed slot 11, each of which extends fromnear the upper surface of the base 7, to a suitable 'y pointnear the upper end of the uprightpart 10 in which it is located. It will be Vunderstood that these angl brackets 8 arepermanentlyflxed to the base 7 f of the case and in such away that they as well as the base can be freely inserted bef tween' the front' and rear end walls of the case.
The rear end wall 12 of the box-like part of the case ,6 is provided in its lower end 'or portion with a pair'of vertical slots 13 which4 are spaced `from each other in parallelism and so as tok'coincide with the slots 11 of said i4 is secured to the wall 12 so as yto cover the slots 13 therein. Thus it will'be understood that the flange 15 of each of the brackets 14 will rest under the lower edge of said wall. At the middle of each liiange 15, is punched out of or otherwise formed andsecured thereto a holding member for an upright forked spring catch, designated as a whole byk the.v
numeral r16, each of which consists of anup-` rightarm 17 having at its upper end a forward extension 18 and its lower end provided with an openingl 19 to receive said holding` member, which is designatedby the reference numeral 20 and whichholding member, in the present instance, consists of a projection' 21st-ruck out of and turnedupwardly and then longitudinally in a horizontal planev with respect to itsfiange 15, rupon the horizontal portion of which the opening 19 of the member 16 is tted. Each of the flanges 15 also has, in the present instance, struck up from its middle portion a projection 22, the upper portion of which lies at the free end o the part 21 and serves to hold the member 16 in position.
The lower portion of the arm 17 terminates in a flat straight line as at 23, see Fig. 4, and rests against that portion of each of the flanges 15 from which the projection 22 is struck up. Just rearwardly of each of the openings 19 in the arms 17 is provided a. rounded portion 24 from which is upwardly extended a spring member 25 which latter contacts at its upper end with the inner surface of one of the brackets 14 directly rear wardly of the extensions 18 which normally project through the slots 13 and each of which said extensions is provided on its front surface with a downwardly and outwardly inclined part 18 as shown in Figs. 1 and 4 of the drawings for the purpose of co-acting with the upper end of each of the brackets 10 to force the Catch members 16 rearwardly when the box-like part 6 of the casing is being placed downwardly over the base. During this operation it is apparent that the spring members 25 will yield sufficiently to permit the members 16 being deflected outwardly7 after which they will press said members forwardly thus causing them to pass through the slots 11 so as to engage the upper ends of said slots and thereby prevent the raising of the box-like member of the casing.
From the foregoing and by reference to the drawings, it will be clearly understood and readily seen, that, assuming the cover or box-like part 6 to be in its fastened position as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, it is ohvious; that by slightly tilting the front part of the cover rearwardly, the arms 16 will be caused to be released from the slots 11 and the front ends of the extensions 18 to contact with the brackets 8 just above the slots 11 therein. In this position of the parts, it is evident that the cover can now he removed from the base and the machine mounted thereon. The operation of fastening the cover to the base has been before explained, and it is deemed unnecessary to herein repeat said explanation.
Havin0r thus fully described my invention, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isw 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of the base of a carryinor case with a pair of spaced brackets vertically extended from one edge thereof and each having a vertically disposed slot, an inverted box-like cover adapted to receive at its lower portion said base and provided in one of its walls with a pair of vertical slots to coincide in part with said slots in the brackets, another pair of brackets secured to the cover over the last named slots and each having a flange at its lower end provided with a holding member, and a bifurcated spring catch mounted on each of said holding members and extended vertically in said coinciding slots.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a carrying case base, a cover therefor, and disengageable means for releasahly fastening the base and cover together, said means comprising a slotted mem ber on said base, and a spring catch member on said cover having a portion thereof locatable in the slot of said slotted member when said Cover and base are in closed relation, said catch and slotted member being so associable that said catch may be rotated out of engagement with said slotted member upon disengagement of said cover and base.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a carrying case base, a cover therefor, and disengageable means for releasably fastening the base and cover together, said means comprising a slotted member on said base, and a bifurcated spring catch membei` comprising an engaging prong anda biasing prong, said engageable prong being locatable in the slot of said slotted member when said cover and base are in closed relation, said catch and slotted member beingT so associated that the engageable prong may he rotated out of engagement with said slot ted member upon disengagement of said cover and base.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination ot' a carrying case base, a cover therefor, and disengageable means for releasably fastening the base and cover together, said means comprising a slotted member on said base, a bifurcated spring catch member comprising an engageable prong and a biasing prong, and a bracket member sccured to said cover and upon which said spring catch is so mounted that said biasing prong functions to force said engaging prong into the slot in said slotted member when said cover and base are in closed relation, said members being so associated that said engageable rong may be rotated out of engagement with said slotted member to release said cover from said base.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a carrying case base and an inverted box-like cover adapted to receive and close said base, of securing means comprising a bracket secured to one edge of said base and having a vertically disposed slot above said base, and a spring catch member for engaging a portion of said base bracket, said cover being provided with an opening in which said catch is receivable so that the major portion of the operating parts of said catch are contained within said cover opening.
6. In a device of the class described, the
