Be it known that I, RICHARD O. BARLER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Ink-Pad Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and ex'- act specification, as will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. The invention relates to ink pad boxes, and has for its chief aim to improve the construction and increase theeiiiciency and util*- ity of devices of this character. One of the main objects of my invention is the provision of a novel cover actuating means adapted to normally hold andv retain the cover down over the pad in a'locked closed position and designed when actuated to release the cover and raise the same to its open position in readiness for use, and without the users hand contacting in any way with the pad or its container. Another object is to produce an ink pad box possessing the characteristics of durability, compactness, neatness in appearance, and one which may be readily and cheaply manufactured.
These together with such other objects as may hereinafter appear, or are incident to my invention, I attain by means of the construction illustrated in preferred form in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of my improved ink pad box, with the cover shown in its raised position;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the box;
Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views respectively taken along the lines 3-3 and 4 4 in Fig.2;and w Fig. 5 is an enlarged detailed view of that portion of the front wall of the container affording a rest for the catch.
Referring to drawings, A designates the box proper, B the pad, and C the cover.
The box is preferably cast in the shape` shown and comprises a base or partition 6 whose upper face .is recessed to lreceive the pad B within a pad retaining flange 7 disposed marginally of said'upper face. Similarly, the under face is marginally flanged to provide the depending wall 8 which constitutes a support for the box, the partition being disposed in a plane above the line of support.
The cover C is dished to provide a downwardly extending wall 9, which latter, when the cover is closed down over the pad, engages a marginal seat 10 disposed about the base of the flange 7 as shown in Fig. 3; the cover being held in its closed position by a pivotally mounted catch D who-se latch nose sive with said portion, and this extension may determine the limit of the upward movement of the cover exactly as the seat 10 limits its downward movement. This extension 10L is formed longitudinally with the elongated slot 15, preferably chamfered or undercut as shown in Fig. 4. Through this slot a bent arm portion 9 of the cover. portion 9a extends into the space 16 below the partition to constitute the hinge element of the cover, and is provided centrally with a hook 17 engaging the apex of an angularly disposed tension spring 18 whose diverging ends 18a extend away from the hinge to engage in the walls of the apertures 14. Upon release of the catch D the tension spring 18 operates to raise the cover, as will be understood.
The catch D is formed with a finger piece 19, and is pivotally mounted upon the front face'y of the wall 8 in 'such a manner that in the downward movement ofthe cover the abutment 12 thereof forces the latch nose 11 outwardly against the tension of a spring 2O to thereupon lock ina notch located just below the beveling of said nose. A hook 21 is mounted upon the inner face of the catch slightly aboveits pivotal axis, and this hook `engages with the spring 20 whose ends 20a engage the walls of the apertures 14, similarly as in the case of the spring 18.
The preferred construction contemplates y the forming of the front face of the wall 8 with a central slot 22, through the upper part of which the hook 21 inwardly extends, to engage the spring, and side apertures 23 into ,which project the catch lugs 24 in a manner designed to prevent lateral displacement of the catch. Intermediate the slot 22 and apertures 23 are legs 25 outwardly beveled at 26 to provide a seat upon which the catch pivotally rocks under actuation, and against which it is held in po sition 'for actuation by the spring 20 and lugs 24. This stated construction is conducive to efficient catch action, may be readily and cheaply manufactured, and the parts are easily assembled and are particularly accessible for repair. lVith the single exception ot the major portionof the catch, it will be noted that all ot the operating parts are located under cover within the recess 1G.

Ipon release ot the finger piece 19, the spring 20 withdraws the latch nose inwardly in readiness to be forced in an outward direction by the abutment 12 in the closing ot' the cover, which latter is held closed downon its seat 10 by the ensuing locking engagement between the latch nose and the said abutment.
That I claim is 1. In a device of the character described,
' the combination oit a box-like container por tion provided with a basal supporting portion formed with an open bottom, a hinged cover for said box, a releasable catch for saidv cover, and tension means disposed in said open bottom and operatively associated with said catch and cover.
2. in ink pad box comprising in combination, a box-like container portion. provided with a basal supporting portion and formed with an open top and bottom, a hinged cover for said open top, a releasable catch for said cover, said cover and catch mounted on said basal portion and said cover having a hinge element extending into said open bottom, and actuating means or said catch and said hinge element.
An ink pad box comprising in combination, a box-like container portion provided with a basal walled portion marginally depending therefrom to support said first-mentioned portion, a hinged cover for said box, a releasable catch for said cover, said cover and catch mounted on said basal portion and formed with extensions leading oppositely and inwardly through the wall of said basal portion, and spring vmeans disposed below said container portion and operatively connected with said extensions.
4. A device of the `character described comprisinga box having a basal supporting portion, said basal portion having an open bottom land an extension disposed outwardly ot said box, a hinged cover for said box having a hinge element extending through said extension into said open botto-1n, a releasable catch on said basal portion for the cover, and spring means for operating said catch and said hinge element.
A, device of the character described comprising a container box having a basal supporting portion, said basal portion provided with an open bottom and a rear extension formed integral with said box, a co-ver for said box hingedly mounted on said rear extension and having a depending hinge element, a releasable catch for said cover, and spring means disposed in said open bottom for operating said catch and said hinge element.
6. An ink pad container comprising a box having a horizontally and centrally disposed container partition and an open top and bottom on opposite sides of said partition, a cover normally closing said open top and adapted for movement to uncover said top, and cover actuating means operatively disposedin said open bottom.
7. In a device of the character described, and in combination, a base member having a side wall portion formed with a seat and a plurality of apertures adjacent said seat, a cover for said base member, a catch for said cover resting on said seat and having a lug extended into one of the apertures, and a spring for said cath extending through another of the said apertures.
