IMPROVEMENT IN susPENDERs.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,459, dated March 7, 1876; application filed -September 2, 1875. I'
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER ADAM- SON, of the city of Washington, in the county of Washington and Districtof Columbia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combined Shoulder-Brace and Suspenders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference markedv there- Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my. Suspenders, seen 'from the rear; and Figs. 2 and 3 are detail,A views thereof. Fig. 4. is a plan view from the front.
This invention has relation to' improvements in combined Suspenders and braces,v
wherein are employed igure-of-eight braces made of webbing; and the nature of the invention consists, mainly, in combining with such a brace of igure-of-eight form, having its ends extended from the crossing at the back downward, a three-barred clamp-buckle, through which the body and the two ends of the webbing are passed, the brace thus formed being capable of adjustment to t the person;
of a wearer of anyl size, and to regulate the bracing-strain from the shoulders toward the center of the back, as will be 'hereafter more fully explained and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates the main belt ot' my combined improved brace and suspender, which is preferably formed of elastic webbing. This belt is first passed through a three-barred clampbuckle, B, until its ends extend evenly out vbeyond the same, when they are turned inwardly toward, and passed from opposite' ciently through clamp B to admit of a buttonhole tag, G, being stitched thereto, or of the application cfa separate tag, C', by means of the usual well-known buckle d. In the latter case I prefer to have the-strip of webbing of which the tigure-oieight brace is made, of somewhat greater length than when the tags are secured directly to the ends of the webbing. Tagsv C are designed to be buttoned to the rear part of the waistband. v D represents slide-buckles, to the central crossbar e of which is pivoted the upper reduced end of a segment-shaped metallic plate, E, thel lower edge of which is provided with a curved slot, f, by means of which breaststraps F are attached thereto.
The straps are provided each with an attachment, G, combining the functions of a snap-hook and buckle, to which the front tags H are attached .by yengaging a ring, g, to which they are stitched, over the combined hook and buckle G., The connection of the front portion of the waistband with the figureoieight brace is thus secured.
As shown in Fig. 1, the material of the gure-of-eight brace is compressed between the central bar b of the clamp and its lateral ba-rs b', this effect being due to the breadth and to the raised position of the former, thus securing an adjustment of the parts of the brace in conformity with the requirements of different sizes of men. This clamp also serves to regulate the bracing action of the shoulderloops, which tends to draw the shoulders toward the center of the back.
The'peculiar construction of slide-buckles D, and of the slotted vibrating plates E, hinged or pivoted thereto, is such that when front straps F accommodate themselves to the movements of the wearer, vibratory action will occur either in the slot of plate E, or upon the pivot p, by meansY of which the said plate is attached to the buckle, thus preventing the latter from crumpling belt A, or forming raised surfaces thereon, the friction of which upon the person of a wearer would be apt to produce galling.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with asingle strap, A, of webbing, whereof the central portion is passed horizontally across the back, and the ends In testimony that I claim. the above I have are looped around, under,- and over theshouldvhereunto subscribed my name in the presence ers, crossing each other and th liddle of dthe of two Witnesses. strap at-the back, and extende ownwar at c c, of the adjustable clamp B, connecting said ALEXANDER' ADAMSON' middle and ends of said strap at the crossing Witnesses:
to regulate the size and `bracing action, asf JAS. B, Looms,
specified. WALTER C. MASI.
