This invention relates to gas stoves wherein burner and pilot light pipes lead from a supply pipe and each of said burner and pilot light ipes is arranged with a control valve, and relates particularly to means for actuating the pilot light valve to open the same by an opening movement imparted to the burner valve to effect an igniting of the gas at the burner.
We are aware of devices of this character wherein the pilot light valve is actuated to impart an opening and closing movement thereto by the continuous opening movement of a burner valve. However, in such devices after opening movement has been imparted to the burner valve should a closing or a partially closing, movement be imparted to the burner valve the pilot light valve is also actuated and imparting opening movement thereto, and should the burner valve be retained in a partially closed position the pilot light valve will be maintained in open posi tien.
It is the object of the present invention 5 to provide improved means for actuating the pilot light valve of a gas stove to effect an opening and closing movement of such valve during the continuous opening movement of he burner valve, and after an opening movement has been imparted to the burner valve prevent the actuation of the pilot light valve by a closing movement of the burner valve and until a successive opening movement of the burner valve, and to provide means for this purpose which is novel, simple and cheap in structure, and eliicient in use.
In the drawing accompanying and forming a part of this application Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a gas stove with an embodiment of our invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a sectional View, on an enlarged scale taken on the line 2--2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrow, to show the connection between a burner valve and the means for actuating the pilot light valve by an opening movement of the burner valve.
Figures 3 and 1 are sectional views, on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 33 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrow to show the means to actuate the pilot light valve to open the same, the valve being shown in closed position in Figure 8 and in open position in Figure 4.
Figures 5, G and 7 are detail views of the means operative from the burner valve to op rate the pilot light valve actuating means and showing the same in difierent positions; and
Figures 8, 9 and 10 are perspective Views of parts of the actuating means for the pilot light valve.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated we have shown our improved pilot light valve actuating means in connection with a stove 10 arranged with multiple burners 11, shown as tour in number, but it will be obvious that same may be used with a single burner.
The burners are connected with a manifold gas supply pipe 12 by pipes 13 leading therefrom each arranged with a control Valve 14, in the form of a plug or spigot valve of conventional form and construction. A pilot light 15 interposed between the burners is connected with the supply pipe by a pipe 16 leading therefrom arranged with a valve of the usual form and embodying a valve oasing 17, a valve plug in said casing having the stem 18 extending outward and downward from the valve casing, which valve is actuated by an axial movement and normally urged to closed position by a spring (not shown) within the casing, and the valve is opened by moving the valve plug inward against the action of such spring.
A shaft 19 is rotatably carried in arms extending downwardly from collars fixed upon the supply pipe, as shown at 20. A cam 21 (Figure 9) is fixed on said shaft in operative relation to a head fixed to the stem of the control valve for the pilot light. A cam 22 (Figure 10) is mounted on a portion of each of the burner valves extending below the valve casing. Sleeves, one for co-operating with each of the burner valves, are mounted on the shaft to rotate therewith and have sliding movement thereon, each sleeve being mounted between a pair of abutments comprising a pin 24 fixed in the shaft and engaging in a slot in one end of the sleeve and a collar 25 adj ustably secured on the shaft, the sleeves being urged in a direction toward the pin abutments by springs 26 coiled about the shaft between the collars and sleeves. To permit of rotation of the sleeves with a sliding movement thereof on the shaft, pins fixed in the shaft engage slots in the sleeves, as at 2?. Fingers 28 are extended laterally from the sleeves, and the sleeves are arranged on the shaft so that the fingers, with the burner valves closed, will be positioned opposite and for engagement by a fiat 29 on the cams carried by such valves.
In operation as a burner valve is moved to open position the flat 29 on the cam 22 carried by it will engage with the sleeve finger, as shown in Figure 5, and thereby rotate the shaft causing the cam 21 to engage and move the pilot light valve inward and open the same. During the opening movement of the burner valve the cam 22 will eifect movement of the sleeve along the shaft against the tension of the spring 26 (Figure 6) and just previous to reaching its fully open position the sleeve linger will ride off the cam and assume a position as shown in Figure 7, return rotative movement being imparted to the shaft through the spring of the pilot light valve acting on such valve in moving it to closing osition. In this position of the sleeve linger it will be in engagement with an arcuate portion of the cam and upon closing movement being imparted to the burner valve only sliding movement will be imparted to the sleeve on the shaft and eifecting no actuation of the pilot light valve. It will be obvious that should the burner valve be moved to partially closed position no actuation of the pilot light valve will be effected, and that actuation of the pilot light valve cannot again be effected until the burner valve has been moved to fullv closed position.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
1. In a gas stove, the combination with burner and pilot light supply pipes arranged with control valves, of means operative to actuate the pilot light valve to effect an opening and closing movement of the same from and by the opening of the burner valve to open position and then permit of variable closing movement of the burner valve without efi'ecting operation of the pilot light valve comprising a rotatable shaft, a cam fixed on the shaft to co-operate with the pilot light valve, a cam carried by and movable with the burner valve, and a sleeve rotatable with and slidable on the shaft with which the cam carried by the burner valve co-operates.
