Description

1939. s. SULLIVAN SNAP CONSTRUCTION Filed Aug. 31, 1928 ally/I SIMON SULL/Vfl/V.
' INVE TOR.
ATTO NEYI Patented Jan. 21, 195%} PATENT OFFICE SIMON SULLIVAN, OF KILLALOE, ONTARIO, CANADA SNAP CONSTRUCTION Application filed August 31, 1928, Serial No. 303,252, and in Canada August 23, 1928.
This invention relates to a snap and particularly to a construction which would be adaptable for use in connection with a harness, although it may be used for any other desired purpose for which it may be found of service.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple construction, which can be manufactured at a reasonable cost and yet will give most eflicient service in retaining the ring, to which it may be engaged, in proper position in the snap construction and eliminate the possibility of the snap working back out of normal position and causing an undesirable eifect on the movable element or tongue.
A further object is to provide an integral portion protruding out from one end of the snap to conveniently attach a strap fitting thereto.
A further object of my invention is to provide a housing in the curved end of the body portion in which the free end of the tongue is normally positioned and retained.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangementof co-operating elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing forming a part of the present application, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the different views.
3 is the body portion having integral therewith outwardly directed portions 1 at one end, intermediate the outer ends of which is the integrally formed portion 5 around which the leather fitting of a harness may be engaged. The other end of the body portion 8 iscurved back upon itself to form a hook as at 6. Formed on the under side of this end port-ion 6 is a housing composed of an inwardly directed flange portion in which the free end of the hereinafter mentioned tongue is adapted to be seated. The body portion is provided with a longitudinal slot as at 7 and a back opening as at 8, the purpose of which will be hereinafter mentioned.
9 is a tongue, having spaced integral lugs 10 and spaced lips 11. 12 is a pin extending through the registering openings in the opposite sides of the body portion 14 and in the lugs 10. 15 is a spring having one end secured through the opening 16 of the body portion 3, the other end bearing tensionally on the under side of the tongue 9, the spring 15 being bent around the pin 12 intermediate its ends to cause such tension. The free end of the tongue 9 is provided with an integrally formed block 17 designed to close across adjacent the space intermediate the housing 20 and the body portion .3, thus preventing the ring from moving rearwardly from its normal position in the forward end of the body portion. In Fig. 2, the position of the tongue 9 and the block 17 extending Through the opening 18 will be noted in dotted mes.
The foregoing specification and annexed drawing disclose the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is to be understood that minor changes may be resorted to in the commercial adaptation of my invention without departing from the scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
hat I claim as new is:
1. A snap comprising a body portion; the forward end of said body portion being curved back upon itself; a housing projecting inwardly from the free end of the curved back portion, which housing extends transversely to partially close the opening between said curved back portion and said body portion; a tongue pivotally mounted in the rear end of said body portion; the free end of said tongue 7 adapted to be normally seated in said housing; a block depending from the free end of said tongue, which block extends transversely of said body portion to close the remaining space between said housing and said body portion when said tongue is in normal seated position and a means for retaining said tongue in normal seated position.
2. A snap comprising a body portion; the forward end of said body portion being curved back upon itself; a housing projecting inwardly from the free end of the curved back portion, which housing extends transversely to partially close the opening between said curved back portion and said body portion; a tongue pivotally mounted in the rear endof said body portion; the free end of said tongue adapted to be normally seated in said housing; a block depending from the free end of said tongue, which block extends transversely of said body portion to close the remaining space between said housing and said body portion when said tongue is in normal seated position; a means for retaining said tongue in normal seated position and a strap engagement portion depending from the rear of said body portion.
3. snap comprising a body portion; the forward end of said body portion being curved back upon itself; a housing projecting inwardly from the free end of the curved back portion, which housing extends transversely to partially close the opening between said curved back portion and said body portion; a to ue pivotally mounted in the rear end of saifbody portion; the free end of said tongue adapted to be normally seated in said housing; a block depending from the free end of said tongue, which block extends transversely of said body portion to close the remaining space between said housing and said body portion when said tongue is in normal seated position; a means for retaining said tongue in normal seated position and a concealed tensioning means between said body portion and said tongue for retaining said tongue in normal seated position.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
SIMON SULLIVAN.
