Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,414, dated March 7, 1876; application iledj January 7, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM J. DAREl proved Tug-Buckle, of which the following is' a specification:

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. y Y A l The object of this invention is to furnish an iinproved'tug buckle, which shall be so constructed as to'be less liable;l to split the tug than when made in the usual Way, and which will not injure the tug by compressing it.
The invention consists in a buckle made with two or more tongues, in line with each other and with the length of the buckle, ,and in the bail made with lugs or shoulders upon the rear parts of its side bars to rest against the side bars of the buckle-frame, as herein after 'fully described.
- A represents the frame of the buckle, the rear parts of the side bars of which are bent outward, and then rearward, so that the rear cross-bar al may serve asa keeper to -keep the tug B in place. -The side bars have loops a2 formed upon them to receive the saddle-strap and the belly-band, and the rear cross-bar c1 has a loop, a3, formed upon it toireceive the breeching-strap. The front cross-bar a4 has a rigid tongue, O, formed upon it to pass through a hole in the tug B. The buckle A inthe tug B. The holes .in the tug B are,
made at exactly the same distance apart as the tongues (l, so that Ythe strain may come equally upon all the tongues.
This construction enables the tug to bear without splitting as many times the strain that would split it with a singletongue buckle as there are tongues used.
D is the hame-tug, to the rear end of which is attached a bail, E., The side bars ofthe bail E are bent to pass through the buckle A, in the rear of its front cross-bar, and allow the tug B to pass through it.` Upon .the rear parts of the side bars ofthe bail E areformed lugs or shoulders e', lto rest upon the side bars of the buckle A, to preventthe tug B from heilig compressed injurionsly.
Having thus described our claim as new and Patent- The combination, in a buckle, of two .or more aligned tongues, and a'bail provided with lugs, as constructed and arranged to operate substantially as described.
