Description

UNITED STATES GEORGE M. WHITE, onnnnnnnssionon OF'TWO T HIRDS Hrs RIGHT To ROBERT "1. CLARKE, OF BRIDGEPORT, -AND FRANCIS J. STERLI N G OF DERBY, oounn'orrour.
IMPROVEMENT I N"P,I-\PERW BIOXVESL Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [74,332, dated February 29, 1876; application filed January 26, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that'I, GEORGE M. WHITE, of Derby, in the county of NewHaven and in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manufacturers Boxes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accom-' to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the blank as it comes from the die, and represents the entire box with all of its parts complete. Fig. 2 represents a front view of the box folded in form preparatory to closing in the top flaps after filling; and Fig. 3 is a view of the box when filled, closed, and fastened.
A A represent the two parts which are lapped or fastened together at pleasure to form one of the narrower sides; A is the other narrow side; B B, the two wider sides; 0 O, the lapels which, with the strap D, forms the bottom D, the main strap which fastens the entire box together; E and F, the lapels which form the top G, the guard or guide to the strap; E, that portion of the strap which crosses the top to hold the lapels in place; I,
Y the tongue; J, the incision in the side of the box for the tongue, and K, the end of the tongue projectingthrough the incision and fastened as appears in Fig. 3.
The entire blank of which this box is'formed is cut and creased for folding with a die, and all of its parts are connected together, making but a single blank, which can be conveniently folded for transportation.
The box is formed from the blank in the following manner: Take the blank in the left hand and fold the half sides A A under,
and fasten them together, if desired. Turn down the lapels O G, insert the strap D between the side of the boxopposite to it and the lapels turned down and draw it through at the top, when the box is ready for filling. After the box is filled, turn down the lapel E, then turn the guard G from the position shown by dotted lines into the position shown by full lines, (in Fig. 1,) insert the said guard G between it and the side provided with the incision, when the lapel F will be in place; then insert the tongue between the guard G on the lapel F and the side of the box next to it and through the incision J when the box is formed, and, if desired, for greater security, the tongue may be fastened by a seal or tack, as appears in Fig. 3. It will be seen that as the tongue passes through the side and the guard is between it and the article with which the box is filled, it can be more readily inserted and removed than others of a similar characrer, and, if desired, a guard can be formed by fastening the edges of a strip across the edges of the inside of the box.
My invention consists of a box, both ends of which are formed of three thicknesses of material, making them of great and equal strength, the interior surface of which is free from all obstructions, which avoid the inconvenience and loss of time caused by placing the hand inside of the box in the process of filling, and provided with a single strap, which in part forms both ends of the box and binds the entire box together, the end of which strap performs the oflice of a tongue, and is inserted under and through one side of the box, and, in combination with the guard and incision in the side of the box, fastens and. binds the whole together.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As an article of manufacture, the box herein described, consisting of a single-piece cut blank, having a principal or body portion which forms in folding the sides of the box, and from which project an elongated lockingstrap, together with correspondingly-attached top and bottom flap-pieces oppositely located,
one of the top flaps being provided with a being provided with a lateral extension or lateral extension guard-piece; the entire guardi-piece-G, the entire blank being adapted blank being creased and folded along the to be folded along the dotted lines to form a dotted lines to form the completed box, subbox, the whole being constructed substanstantially as herein shown and described. tially' as described.
2. Ablank for amannfacturers box, having In testimony that I claim the foregoing I a principal or body portion, A A B B A, fl havehereunto set my hand this 22dd'ay ofadapted to form, when folded, the sidesofithe Jafiuary,.1876; box, and from which projects an elongated GEORGE; M. WHITE. locking-strap, D, and correspondingly-at Witnesses: tached top and bottom flap-pieces G G andiEv J. WILBURPARROTT, F, oppositely located, one of the top flaps SHERWOOD STERLING-
