Description
S. GOODKIND.
CARTON.
APPLICATION man FEB.25. 1915.
Llsg@ Patented May 4, 1915.
SAMUEL GOODKIND, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CARTON.
specification of Letters Patent' Applieatonled February 25, 1915. Serial No.\10,468.
To all "whom it may concern Be 1t known thatl, SAMUEL GooDKiNn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Carton, of which .the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object to provide a carton which may be used for keeping cereals clean and free from dust, the carton being so constructed that when it is opened, one of its parts will serve as a spout and another of its parts will serve as a means to retard the flow of the cereal from the carton to the spout.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification in which the preferred form of my invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the views in whichi Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the carton with its parts in positionto permit the user to pour the contents from the carton; Fig. 2 is ay fragmentary vview showing the lposition of the spout after it has been raised; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view showing how the spout and the tongue appear when the tongue has been disposed between the spout and the wings which are connected therewith; Fig. 4 is a Sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig.,3; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig, 3; Fig. 6 is a face view showing the blank `which is used in the construction of the carton.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that a blank 10 is provided, there being longitudinal creases 11, 12, 13 and 14 along the blank, dividing the. blank into portions 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19, a flap 20 extending from theend portion 15 as shown'in Fig. 6.of the drawings. Extending from the middle portion 17 of the blank there is a spout 21 having a cutaway portion 22 to assist in directing the How of the cereal or other goods contained in the carton over the edge of the spout adjacent its center, the said spout 21 being integral with the blank as illustrated in Fig. 6 of the dra-wings, and being also integral with the wings 23 which are disposed at the sides of the spout 21, the said wingsv being also integral with the portionsl and 18 of the blank. There are obliquely disposed creases 24.in the wings 23, the' said creases extending from the creases 12 and 13 where they intersect with the crease 25 which separates the spout 21 from the middle portion 17 of the blank 10. This crease 25 is extended and serves to separate the wings 23 from the portions 16 and 1.8 of the blank. ll prefer tocut the wings 23 as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings with edges 26 forming a continuation of the outer edges 27 of the spout and with edges 28 which are substantially in alinement with the creases 11 and 14. The wings 23 are cut from the edges 28 to the creases 24, the edges 29 with the edges 28 forming an obtuse angle, the wings being also cut from the edges 26 to the creases 24;
as at 30, the edge 30,forming with the edges' 26 obtuse angles, the edge 30 also forming with the edges 29 obtuse angles. Extending from the portion 19 of the blank there is a tongue 31 with a bent end 32 and extending from the portion 15 of the blank 10 there is a partition 33 having a cutaway portion 34 through which the cereal may flow from the carton to the spout, when the parts of the blank are folded and are secured together as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of the drawings. Extending from the end 35 of the blank 10 there is a. flap 36 which projects from the middle portion 17 of the blank 10. There is also a lla-p 37 which extends from the portion 16 of the blank 10 at the blanks end 35, and from the portion 18 of the blank there is a flap 38. ln addition, there is a iap 39 which extends from the portion 19 of the blank.
When the blank 10 is folded at its creases 11, 12, 13 and 14, the portions 16, 17, 18 and 19 form the sides of the carton and the portion 15 of the blank is disposed below the Patented May 4, 1915.
Having thus described my invention I claim as'new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: n
1. In an article of the class described, a carton having at the end forming a continuation of one side, wings at the side of the spout connecting the spout with the sides of the carton adjacent the cartonfs side from which the spout extends, there being creases in the Wings, and a tongue on the cartons side opposite the rst mentioned cartons side for disposal between the vspout and the wings for closing the carton. j
2. In an article of the class described, a carton having four sides and an end, a spout at the end forming a continuation of one side, wings at .the side of the spout connecting the spout with the sides of the carton adjacent the cartons side from which the spout extends, there being creases in the Wings, and a tongue and a partition extending from the cartons side opposite the irst mentioned cartons side, the partition being disposed within the tongue and having an opening adjacent the cartons side having the spout to permit a limited flow of the contents of the carton to the spout, the tongue being provided for disposal between the spout and the wings for closing the carton.
3. In an article of the class described, a
carton having four sides and an end, a spout at the end integral with and forming a. continuation of one of the sides, wings at the sides of the spout, the wings being integral with the spout and with the cartons side adjacent the cartons side having the spout, there being diagonal creases in the Wings four sides and an end, a spoiltY and a tongue integral with and extending from the cartons side opposite the first cartons s ide for disposal between the spout and onc of the end portions of the blank for disposal between the spout and the wings for the purpose speciiied.
5. In an article ofV the class described, a blank having four longitudinal creases separating five portions, the blank being folded at the creases with one of the end portions disposed oi'er the other end portion and secured thereto to form a carton having four sides, an extension at one end of the middle portion of the blank forming a spout, wings integral with the sides of the spout and with the portions of the blank adjacent the said middle portion, there being oblique creases in the wings, a partition extending from the inner end portion of the blank for disposal across an end of the carton to retard the flow of the contents, and a tongue extending from the outer end portion of the blank for disposal between the spout and the wings for the purpose speciiied.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of the two subscribing witnesses.
