Description

Jan. 14, 1930. W H BROUGHTON 1,743,110
ADVERTIS ING S IGN Filed July 16. 1928 Patented Jan. I4, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM HENRY BROUG-HTON, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES GOLD, OFV STANSTED', ESSEX, ENGLAND ADVERTISING SIGN Application led July 16, 1928, Serial No. 293,057, and in Great Britain December 12, 1927.
This invention relates to signs of the kind employing a front stencil or display device and a rearward inclined reflector, and has for its object to provide an improved construe tion which will be cheap to manufacture and efficient and strong in use.
According to the invention, a sign of the above type is constructed with a .casing comprising two flanged plates having central apertures and two side walls of truncated triangular form by which the plates are united together. The plates are preferably similar and are arranged with their flanges directed towards each other and united by placing the triangular side walls within the end flanges and uniting them thereto, for example by bolts.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. l shows a perspective view partly in section of a sign,
Fig. 2 a view of a front or rear plate, and
'Fig 3 is an. end view of a side wall secured to the front and rear plates.
Referring now to the drawing, the casing of the sign comprises two end plates l, 2 having rectangular flanges 3 round their four edges adapted to hold a front display device l and rearwardly arranged reflector 5.
The iront and rear plates are united by side plates G of truncatedtriangular section and inthe preferred construction, the side walls are provided with holes 'l' from which the sign can be suspended.
In the preferred construction also the front and rear plates as well as being inclined to each other are both inclined to the vertical, this being effected by making the upper angles of the side walls 6 both to be acute angles.
The side flanges 3 and the side walls 6 are both perforated as at 8 for the purpose or" securing the parts together, but one of the parts may alternatively be provided with slots 9 so that a certain amount ot minor adjustment is possible between the front and rear plates when the casing is being assembled. A stiil'ening piece l0 may be bolted to the bottom horizontal flanges 3 to further strengthen the casing construction; where the slots 9 are employed the stiffening piece l() will be required to be slightly flexible.
The display device 4 and reflector 5 snugly truncated triangular shape, holes Jformed in y certain of the flanges of said plates and slots in certain of the flanges of said plates and in said side walls for the attachment oi securing means,A and transverse securing means extending through the holes in said side walls and the holes in the flanges of said plates, other transverse securing means extending through certain of the holes on one of said members and the slots in the other of said members to permit of the minor angular ad justment of the flanged plates during assembly.
2. In a sign` a holder for a light reflecting or transmitting medium comprising a flanged plate having a central aperture, detachable securing means for said medium and means to attach said means to said plate, a second similar holder, a pair of flanged side walls of truncated triangular shape, and detachable means for securing flanges of the holders to flanges of the side walls, including slots and pins between the flanges, said slots and pins permitting minor adjustment between the parts during assembly.
3. In a sign, a holder for a light reflet-tfI ing or transmitting medium comprising a flanged plate having a central aperture, detachable securing means for said medium, and means to attach said means to said plate, a second similar holder, a pair of flanged side Walls of truncated triangular shape, one of the base angles being smaller than the other,
' and detachable means for securing flanges of the holders to anges of the side Walls,7 including` slots and pins between vthe flanges to permit minor adjustment of the parts during assembly.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. l WILLIAM HENRY BROUGHTON.
