Application filed February 11, 1928. Serial No. 253,591.
The present invention relates to illuminated display devices and particularly to devices of this sort intended for thedisplay of perforated license plates for vehicles so 5 that the numbers thereon will be clearly vis'- ible both by day and night."
Among the objects of the invention 15 to simplify and to improve-the construction of such devices andto reduce the cost of manufacture and installation. 7
Other objects will readily occurto those skilled in the art upon reference to the following description and the accompanying drawings, in which v i V Figure 1, is a VlGW in elevation of the holder with a suitable license plate therein;
Figure 2, is a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1; and v I Figure 3, is a section on line 33 of Figure 1.
ing its back, ends and bottom made integral either by forming a suitable sheet of metal or by securing the proper size plates together by soldering, Welding or otherwise,
The bottom of said casing will have at its forward edge a groove portion 11 formed by bending the metal in any suitable process, while-the side members 12 will be provided with similar grooves 13. r I
The top edge of the rear wall of the easing will be bent forward and turned underv upon itself to provide an interlocking portion 14 adapted to cooperate with a'similarly turned edge" 15 of the top'member 16.
r plane of the several grooves 11 and 13 so as,
to form an overhanging edge 17.
It is preferred to mount the casing 10 on screws or bolts extending throughtheback member of the casing so that all of the The perforated license plate 20 shown clearly in Figure 1 will preferably be ofrather thin material and of such sizeas to fit in the grooves '11 and 18 so as to extend to 's's the bottom thereof and in the bottoms of ing color. The holder consists of acasing 10 hava suitable bracket or the body of a vehicle by the grooves it is preferredto place a strip of p Also 7 felt or other cushioning material"; 21. adapted to fit in these grooves upon the felt 21, is an; opalescent or semi-transparent plate 22 preferably of glass;
After the plates 20 and 22 serted in the grooves, the cover member 16 will be slipped on from' on'e end'of the casing withthe portions 14 and 15 interlocking and this will be secured against removal by means of a screw 30" extending through one end-of the cover 16 and a suitable lug"- on the upper end of one of the end por- T tions 12. r 1 a lVith a suitably colored plate 22 behind the perforated license plate, it will be possible to readily observe the numbers in the plate 20, it being,- of course, obvious that the surface of plate 20 shall be'of some contrasti In order to be able to distinguish the;
numbers in the plate'at night, the. casing will 7 be provided with illuminating means, such as is shown clearly in Figures '2 and 3. This illuminating means consists of a horizontal-i ly placed double end socket 35 having ineach end an electric bulb 36 and to which current is supplied through a suitable lead wire.
- 10 and prevented from fraying by ferrule member 38. The socket maybe mounted on the back'of the casing lO'upon a bracket39' and is preferably ofsuchlength as. to space the bulbs severalrinches apart. I i
- It is preferred to usein thepresent device a'plate 22 of white opalescent glass'and to usebulbs 36'of some suitable color, al-- though'white bulbs and a may be used, if desired. a i
Now having described the inventionand the preferred form" of embodiment 7 thereof colored plate it is to be understood that the same is to be limited not to the specific details herein set forth but only by the scope, of the "claims which follow. l I I claim a 1. A license plate holder comprising a casing having grooves along its side edges and bottom edge and adapted to retain therei 'l the rear edge thereof with means adapted to interlock with a cover member, a cover member for the same provided with means have been 1171- f adapi/ed, to interlock with the, befO're menco'ver, for-said casing-interlocking means' 1 I 1 tioned interlocking 'means, and-means for toh'old isaidcover inwplace upon the casing,
securing said cover in place. a plurality of electric-ligl'lts in said'casing, 10 o 2. A license plateholder comprising a rec-H andhmeans for us upplyjng ..e1eobric .Jcun'rent 5 tangular'casing open at its'ffront and, 120p,v .thereto,
