OFFICE.
LESTER OHNSTEIN, 0F MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
To all whom. t may concern: Y
.Be it known that I, LESTER OHNsTElN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Illuminated License Number Plates and Tail Lights; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will ena-ble others skilled in the art to which it appertans to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an-illuminated license number plate 'that will serve also as a tail light; and, generally stated, the invention consists ot' the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claim. y
The invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawings wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout theseveral views.
Referring vto the drawings:
,ill ig. l is a rear elevation showing the complete device;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section' taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. i
in accordance with my 'invention7 the license number piste 4 has its vnumerals and letters cut out thereof, after the manner of a stencil, so that light can pass through to produce illuminated characters. This plate 4 is preferably a metal plate of the customary type, except that its characters have, as stated, been out out, and in practice, it would be placed adjacent to a red glass plate 5 and the two plates 4 and 5 -in close contact will he inserted into a flanged retaining seat l6 formed on the front portion of a box or ILLUMINATED LICENSENUMBER PLATE AND TAIL' LIGHT.
Specification of Letters ,Patent Patented June 6; 1922. yApplication filed March 1920. Serial No. 3.683653. y
housing 7. The seat 6 is preferably made open at one end for the insertion of the plates 4 and 5 and is provided with a re'- movable end channel 8 which, when applied,
Vholds the two plates in'working position.
The box or housing 7., at its ends, 1sl provided with projecting clips 9 that adapt it to be properly secured to the Vehicle. At the central portion of its top, the housing 7 is provided with a lamp socket 10 that .holds a light bulb' 1l im' illuminating the interior l of the housing.
Green glass plates l2 are mounted in suitable holding trames 13 provided on the ends of the housing and these green plates 12 afford side lights;
By this arrangement, not only are *the characters ot' the license plate illuminated` but they are illuminated in red col0r,so that they a'ord also a tail light which, ofcourse, is required to be in red.
lVhat l claim is: l
The combination with a substantially rectangular housing having an open front and having openings at eaeh"end, an electric lamp socket, a lamp therein disposed in said housingI and depending from the upper side thereof, substantially at the longitudinal centena license number plate having open characters,permitting the passage of light and a colored glass plate placed adjacent the said license plate` the twoplates being held together and extending over the exposed face of the housing, the said housingr having glass plates of different' color than the rst mentioned plate'secured in the openings inthe end thereof 'to serve as side lights, and 'attaching lugs extending at each end of the housing at the rear thereof.
ln testimony whereof l afiix my signature;
LESTER OH NSTEIN.
