enonen ADELBERT norm, F Mmm new YORK A'r'rAcHIivG noon non nastier oo-vnfns Application filed July 21,
purpose of inspecting the contents or for repacking, considerable'difiiculty has been experienced in unfastening the covers and as a general rule some kind of tool has been necessary.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an attaching hook which can be applied readily without the use of a speclal tool and, can also be readily disconnected to allow the cover to be partly or entirely removed.
A further object is to provide a fastening device of this character which will remain in proper position during ordinary handling and prevent the cover from becoming detached. V
A further object is'to provide a fastening i hook which also provides arest for the cover so as to hold it spaced from the basket at the margin.
With the foregoing and other objects 1n View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed maybe made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention. In the accompanying drawings the pre ferred form of the invention has been shownv In said drawings, g t Figure 1 is a plan view of a bushel basket having the present improvements combined therewith.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of a portion thereof.
Figure 3 is a detail View of one of the fastoning hooks. Referringto the figures by characters of reference A designates a basket provided at its top with a hoop B. This basket has the usual slatted cover C and, as shown in Figures land 2,. oneof the slats D has its ends 1926. Serial 'No. 123,958.
projecting beyond the periphery of the cover so as to be fitted Within the wirehandles E of the basket. Other slats, indicated at F are extended across and form part of the cover, these slats F being preferably at right .95 angles to the slats D.
The book constituting the present invention has been shown in detail in FigureB' and includes asingle length ofstifi' wire bent to provide astraight intermediate. portion 1 @0 the ends ofwhich merge into arms 2 having hooked terminals 3. Intermediate portions of these arms are offset to provide rests or shoulders 4. I
In practice the fasteners are placed astride &5. the slats F and are positioned at diametrically opposed portions of thecover as shown inFigure 1. The upper portions ofthe arms are extended along the inner sides of the margin of the cover while the rests or shoull ders i extend under the margin of the cover. Thus the lower portions of thearms can be positioned outside of the hoop B. As the cover is supported by the contents of the basket, it will be apparent that by pressing Z5 downwardly on the cover the same can be sprung so as to permit the hooks .3 to engage the lower edge of the hoop Bl Thus the cover will be held properly assembled with the basket and the shoulders or rests 4 will supso port the marginal portion of the cover normally away from the top of the basket as shown in Figure 2. Whenever it is desired toexamine the contents of the basket it merely becomes necessary to press upon that d5 portion of the cover engaged by the fastener. Thus the thrust will be transmitted through the shoulders or rests 4 to the arms 2 and will result in the withdrawal of the hooks 3 from the hoop B. The constant pressure of the contents of the basket against the cover will be sufficient to hold the hooks in engaging position under normal conditions. Thus it will be seen that the contentsof the basket can be readily eX- amined whenever desired or can be repacked without requiring the use of any special tools for the purpose of disconnecting the cover from the basket.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a basket having a hoop and a cover therefor, of a fastener formed in a single length of wire bent to provide a straight intermediate portion merging into arms, said fastener straddling a portion of the cover inwardly from themargin thereof, each of said arms being outwardly ofl'set between its ends to provide a shoulder engaging the lower edge of the margin of the cover, the lower portions of the arms being extended outside of the hoop of the basket and bent to provide terminal hooks the distance between the shoulders and the hooks being greater than the width of the hoop, the hooks being extended upwardly toward and under the respective shoulders for engaging between the hoop and the adjacent rtion of the basket, said arms being shiftable longitudinally under pressure on the basket cover to bring the shoulders against one ed e of the hoop and to disengage the hooks rom the other edge of the hoop.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature.
GEORGE ADELBERT ACER.
