IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-LIGHTERS FOR STREET-LAMPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l74,l93, dated February 29, 1876; application filed February 5, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, JAMES CHAPMAN, of St. John, in the county of St. John, Province of New Brunswick, and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Lighters for Street-Lamps, of which the following is a specification:

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for lighting street-lamps, which shall be so constructed that no ladder will be required, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.

The invention consists in the combination of the handle, the two rods, the case provided with the lamp, having a conical tube passing through it, and with a bulls-eye lens, and the key with each other, as hereinafter fully described.

A is the handle, whichis made of such a lengththat the user can easily reach the lamp with it while standingupon the ground. To the upper end of the handle Aare attached two. wires or rods, or a bent wire, B, upon the ends of which are formed eyes to receive a bolt, C, that passes. through the upper part of the case I). In the bottom of the case I) is secured a lamp, E, in the manner in which a lamp is usually secured in a lantern. F is a conical tube that passes up through the lamp E, and its upper end is near the wick-tube of the said lamp, so that when the device is lowered over a gas-burner the flame of the lamp may ignite the gas. In one side of the case B is placed a bulls-eye lens, G, to throw light upon the plug of the gas-burner, or the catch of the lantern-door. The case D is covered with a fluted cap, H, to prevent rain or wind from putting out the flame of the lamp E. To the upper end of the handle A is attached a wire or rod, I, the upper end of which is so formed as to fit upon the plug of the gas- B in one direction; but'when inclined in the other direction the said case will rest against the key I, so that it can be carried without swinging.

For turning off the gas, in the morning, a

handle, A, and key, I, may be used without the other parts of the device.

. The combination of the handle A, the rods B, the case D, provided with a lamp, E, havin g a conical tube, F, passing through it, and with a bulls-eye lens, G, and the key I with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
