SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,379, dated October 2'7, 1896.

Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. CASE, of Fenton, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lantern-Lighters and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

This invention pertains to lantern-lighters; and the object is to provide an attachment having an inclosure in which the match may be struck and from which it may be passed directly to the wick.

The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lanternburner provided with my improved attach-' ment. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, shown partly in section. Fig. 3 is an inverted pers ective view of the chimney-holding base with the striking-chamber removed. Fig. at is a detail perspective view of the strikingchamber removed from the chimney-supporting base.

A designates the perforated chimney-support, of ordinary form for lanterns, particularly tubular lanterns, and B is the burner, about which the said base A fits. A slot C is formed in base A in line with the slot D of the flame-fender D of burner B. On the under side of base A is secured the casing E, curved longitudinally to conform to the curvature of base A and provided with the longitudinal slot F in its outer wall. One end of this chamber E communicates with slot C, and the rear wall of the chamber is roughened or serrated, as indicated at C, so that by introducing a match in slot F at its end farthest from slot C and drawing the same to said slot C over the serrated surface G the match will strike and be protected from being extinguished by the wind, and it may be readily pushed upward through slot 0 and the wick of the burner lighted.

The device herein shown and described is of the simplest possible construction and affords ready means for lighting lanterns in the wind without trouble. It also constitutes a 4 safety device, as the match is struck in the inclosure and there confined, and hence there is no chance for the escapement of ignited detached particles of the match-head.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of a burner having an opening leadingtoward the wick, and an elongated horizontally-disposed casing communieating with and extended laterally from the burner-opening, said case having an elongated horizontally disposed strike surface, substantially as described.

2. The combination of the chimney-supporting base provided with a vertical opening, an elongated casing on the under side of the base communicating with said opening, and provided with a longitudinal slot in its front side and the strike-surface upon the rear side of the casing, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination of the burner, the chimney-supporting base, said base being provided with an opening which communicates with the burner, the casing secured to the under side of the base and communicating with said opening in the base, said casing having the elongated horizontal slot in its front surface, and the serrated or roughened surface at the rear of the casing and leading to the opening in the said base, substantially as shown and described.

4. The combination of a burner having an opening leading to a point adjacent the wick, the elongated casin g secured to the under side of the burner and at one end communicating with the burner-opening and extended laterally therefrom, the front of said case formed with the elongated slot through which the match is adapted to move, and the scratcher formed by roughening the inner rear wall of the ease, substantially as shown and described.
