Description
Dec. 24, 1929. w. H. KUPFER BADGE Filed Aug. 51, 1928 dge 5r Every Fhrp Patented Dec. 24, 1929 PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM H, KUPFER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS BADGE Application filed August 31, 1928.
This invention relates to a badge, and more particularly to one having a window and means for interchangeably mounting therein different cards bearing different legends.
One of the main objects of this invention is to provide a novel and improved badge with means which forms a window recess or niche for mounting a card therein, also having transparent window means in front thereof and a door at the rear thereof which is removable to provide for convenient removing and interchanging of said card. Another object is to provide a badge including a rear portion provided with inturned flange means forming a window recess or niche for receiving a card therein, also a door to fit removably in said recess and have means for holding said card but to permit convenient removal of the door and card. A further object is to provide such a novel badge which is simple in construction, is readily arranged and manipulated for the particular use desired, and is economical in manufacture.
These and other objects and advantages are attained with my invention, as Will become apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a view showing the front of this invention;
Fig. 2 is a view showing the rear thereof;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. A is a front inner vipw of the rear member, with the front member removed therefrom;
Fig. 5 is a rear view of the removable door;
Fig. 6 is a cross-section taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 5; and
Fig. 7 is a front view in removable card.
The form of my invention shown in the drawing comprises a front portion with transparent front window means, and a rear portion thereon having means to form a window recess for mountinga card and a door removably therein. In the form illustrated these portions include a front member 10 and a rear member 11, which are bowed or curved and are clamped together at the edges,
perspective of the Serial No. 303,147.
as indicated in the drawing. This badge is preferably arranged in the shape of a flat circular shell, and also in other suitable shapes as may be desired.
The front member 10 of the badge preferably includes a metal sheet or plate 10 and a sheet 12 placed thereover of paper or material adapted to receive printed or impressed matter thereon. A window opening 13 is provided in these two sheets, and a sheet 14 of transparent material is mounted over these sheets and over the opening and forms the front transparent means for the window, to protect but display the card 15 therebeneath which bears the printed matter or legend 16 thereon.
The rear member 11 is preferably in the form of a metal plate curved to form a rear ridge 11 adjacent the outer edge, and having a central depressed portion 17 with an opening 18 therein. From this opening 18 flange means 19 is bent inward or forward on said portion 17 to form a window recess or niche for removably housing said card 15 therein.
A door 20 is provided to removably hold card 15 in place, and this door forms an especially novel feature of the invention. It has flanges 21 extending inward or forward from the main part and fitting snugly within flange means 19 for engaging the card and holding it in position in the window recess. This door has fingers or lugs 22 at one end which slidably engage inward of a part 23 on depressed portion 17, where flange means 19 is cut-away to provide lug-receiving notches. A spring 24 is anchored on member 11, as by being secured to flange means 19 at 25, and this spring normally engages depressed part 26 of the door to hold the door. By pressing spring 24 from part 26 the door is readily removed and the card may be conveniently removed and interchanged for another, thus adapting the badges to be of the same design and to receive therein the various cards bearing different legends.
A member or pin 27 is also provided, and may be mounted on the door, as shown, for holding the badge on a coat or the like.
This form of construction is simple, economical, and of Wide utility, and is convenient to manipulate, the badges in each set being of the same design, and the door can be readily slid out of the recess and the particular card with the desired legend thereon inserted.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A badge in the form of a shellincluding a front window portion and a rear portion having notched means providing a recess for housing a card therein, and a doorhaving means to slidably engage in said notches for holding said card in said recess but to provide for convenient removal of the door and the card. i
2. A badge in the form-of a shell including a front. portion and a rear portion having notched flange means forming a recess or niche for housinga card, and adoor with means to slidably engage in the notches for holdings'aid card and door removably in said recessor niche.
3. A badge comprising a front portion and a rear portion thereon having flange means extending toward said, front portion to pro vide arecess for housing a member, a door to fitinsaid. recess and retain said member, andlug and. spring means for holding said door but permitting ready sliding removal thereof. and. access .to said member.
4:. A badge comprising a front portion with. transparent meansv and a rear portion with notched flange means to form a window recess for receiving a card-like member visible through saidYtransparent means, a door insaid recess toretain said cardlike member therein,,lug, means on said door to fit in the notches in said flange means and permit slidable removal. of said. door, and a spring to aid inholding said door but providev for convenientremoval of said door and member.
5. A badge comprising a frontv member having, window means, a rear member connected thereto and having in turned. flanges forming a recess forcontaininga card. visible through saidwindow means, a door to fitbetween said recess flanges and hold said card, and means for holding said door but permitting; convenient removal thereof.
61A badge comprising a front plate-like member, arear plate-like member connected tosaidfront member and having an opening with; inturned flanges extending therearound toforma recess for housing a flat member, a doortofit between the recess flanges and hold said. flat. member in position, partsof said flanges being cut-away to provide notches,.and lug means on said'door to enter. said notches for engaging the inward'side of said rear member to permit slidable removal ofsaiddoor. and ready access to saidrecess.
' 7. A badge comprising a. front. member ineluding; a plate with an opening therein and transparent. means mounted over said open ing, a rear member in the form of aplateconnected to said front member and having a central opening and inturned flanges therearo-und to form a window recess for holding a card visible through said means, a door with inturned flanges to fit between said recess flanges and engage the card to hold it in posit-ion, and lugs on said door and a spring to permitslidable removal of the door and access to the window recess.
8. A badge in the form of a shell compris ing a front member including a metal sheet and a paper sheet with a central opening in said sheets and a transparent sheet mounted thereover, a rear member including a plate ofmetal' fastened'with its edges to said front member and having inturned. flangesforming a central window recess,a door with inturned flanges to fit. within said recess flanges, and lug and notch means and a spring to hold said door but permit convenientremoval thereof from said rear member.
In testimony whereof I. have. signed. my name to this specification.
WILLIAM KUPFER.
