Application May 9, 1950, Serial No. 160,931
(Cl. 40-10) i 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in identification holders adapted for use as a holder for automobile drivers license as well as for other information or identification means.
An important object of the invention is to provide an identification holder composed of front and rear panels of transparent material connected to each other in sliding confronting relation and with a plurality of individual identification strips and an identification card held between the panels in back to back relation whereby the information on the strips and card may be viewed from opposite sides of the holder.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for easily and quickly removing and replacing the individual identification strips when it is desired to change the information contained thereon without necessitating replacement of the remaining strips or cards.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted to the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of one side of the identification holder;
Figure 2 is a similar view of the reverse side thereof;
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional View taken on a line 3 3 of Figure l Figure 4 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view taken on a line 4 4 of Figure 1; and,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the strip holding panel forming one part of the identification holder.
Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 designates the identification holder generally and which comprises a pair of panels 6 and 'I of transparent material, such as a suitable commercial plastic, and for the purpose of the present description the panel 6 may be designated as the front panel and the panel 'I designated the rear panel.
The panels 6 and 'I are of rectangular shape and panel 6 is formed at its rear surface at its upper and lower edges and at one end edgewith' a channel 8 while the other end edge of the front panel is unobstructed to permit the rabbeted upper and lower edges 9 and rabbeted inner end edge I0 of the back panel l to enter the channel 8. The end edge of panel 'I opposite from its rabbeted end edge I0 is formed with a lip or beading I I which abuts the unobstructed end of front panel 6, as shown more clearly in Figure 4 of the drawings.
The outer surface of rear panel 'I is flush with the channel 8 of front panel 6 and the lip or beading II is flush with the outer surface of front panel 6.
The inner surface of rear panel I is formed with a plurality of spaced apart parallel horizontal grooves I2 for receiving strips I3 of suitable material, each strip containing identification indicia or information such as indicated at I4 which is viewed from the outer surface of the rear panel 1. The grooves I2 are open at the rabbeted end edge Ill of the rear panel for sliding the strips I3 into and out of the grooves.
An identification card I5 is placed between front and rear panels 6 and 'l in channel I! and on which is displayed identification indicia or information I which is viewed through the front panel 6, the strips I3 and card I5 being positioned in back to back relation in the holder.
In assembling the device the card I5 is placed in channel 8 of front holder 6 with the information I6 contained therein facing toward the front of the holder and after placing the information strips I3 in the grooves I2 of rear panel 'I with the information contained thereon facing toward the rear of the holder the rabbeted end edge I0 of the rear Vpanel l is then inserted in the channel 8 at the rear of front panel 6 and then by sliding rear panel I inwardly at the back of front panel 6 the rabbeted edges of the rear panel will be locked in the channel 8 of the front panel and with the panels in confronting relation with respect to each other to hold the card and strips therein. The beading or lip II seals the open edge of front panel I5 and also constitutes a handle for the panel 1.
In View of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
An identification holder comprising a pair of opposed, substantially rectangular transparent plates, channel Xmembersdntegral tWitligthewlongf end of said one plate, the longitudinal channel members providing an opening at the other end: r
of said one plate, the other plate comprising rabbeted longitudinal marginal portions-andl a; rabbeted end portion slidably engageablefinthe channel members, said other plate further having a plurality of spaced parallelgrooveslinrits.,v
and readable through said other plate, an identication card mounted between the plates and readable through said one plate, and a closure member integral with said other end of said other plate and constituting a handle therefor, said closure member comprising a substantially at portion engageable with the adjacent end of said one plate for retaining the strips and the aldfmivosiom ERNEST A@ LAQQUBSiERE.
