having improved form of holder adaptedr to support either a personal card or character plates such as those shown 1n my Pat- Y ent No. 1.537.321, issued May 12. 1925; to

provide a holder of this kind which will permit the card or character plates to be inserted or removed while the holder is attached to the goods; and to provide a marker of this type which may be readily attached r to baggage or other 4personal goods without the use of separate fastening means.

An illustrative embodiment of this inven-` tion is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein V Figure 1 is a front plan of a marker to which this invention is applied.

In the monogram panel shown in my aforementioned patent, the frame of the holder is provided with a plurality of lugs which are bent over the backs of the character plates for securing them to the holder. In such a construction, it is necessary to insert the initials into the holder before the latter is attached to the goods, or, if the initials are to be changed after attachment, the holder must first be removed from the baggage or other goods to permit the lugs to be bent away from the initial plates.

In the speciiic construction herein shown, the present invention is applied to an imroved holder having an opening at each end thereof permitting the insertion of the personal card 0r initial plates through either end of lthe holder while it is attached to the goods. Theholder comprises an improved frame to which the plates or cards are fastened by means of a back panel provided with lugs adapted to be bent across the openings at the ends of the holder.

In the form shown. the improved marker comprises a holder 1 which consists of a framey 2 and bacir panel 3 arranged so as to form. a pocket between them having an opening 4 at each end of the holder `for the insertion of a personal card 5 or a plurality of character plates "6.

The frame 1 preferably comprises a sheet metal stampingproviding a. rectangular face part 7 having bent ont therefrom a pair of side iianges 8 for retaining the character plates or personal card in proper position behind an opening 9 formed in the part 7. Formed on the flanges 8, are prongs 10 adapted for detachably securing the holder to the goods by being inserted through slits in the goods and then bent over as shown in Fig. 2, wherein the baggage or other personal article isfrepresented at 11. The prongs 10 are staggered sothat those on one side will not everlap those on the opposite 'side Yof the frame.

' The panel 3 is rectangular in shape and is of sufiicient width to span the pocket of the frame 2, so as to bear against the edges of the flanges 8. Formed in the side. edges ofthe baclr panel 3, are recesses 12 which fit around the prongs 10. Formed on the ends of the baclr panel 3, are lugs 13 adapted to be bent across the openings 4. to secure the character plates or personal'card within the pocket.

In the form herein shown, the plates 6 are square in form, but they may be octagonal, or of any other symmetrical shape wherein both the. length and breadth are equal, so as to permit the` plates to be arranged in the frame in position to have the characters readable either horizontally as shown in Figure 1 or vertically. The characters may be engraved, embossed, stamped or printed on the plates. Extending around each of the plates 6, is a border 14 having the same color as the part 7 of the frame 2 so as to simulate partitions extending transversely across the opening 9 between the different characters. The border 14 is of less width than the frame part 7, so that only those portiers which extend .eel-ese .the Opening characters.

rlhe holder l and plates 6 may be made of sheet metal and polished or plated to produce any desired finish, or otherwise suitably embellished to render the marker highly decorative l To assemble the improved marker, the back panel 3 is placed on the flanges 8 between theprongs lO of the frame.' Oneof the lugs 13 is lthen bent inwardly into engagement with the inner tace of the traine part 7. The panel 3 is shorter than the frame part 7 so that the lugs, when bent inwardly`v do not project beyond the frame. The holder is then `attached to the goods as hereinbefore described. The other lug 13 is not bent inwardly until after the character plates or cardsl have been inserted. fl/'ith this iinproved construction, the holder may be attached t-o the goods bythe manufacturer oi' the goods and the initials or cards may be inserted by the retailer or anyone.

Nhen the personal card 3 is used in place of the initial plates, a celluloid insert or window is inserted into the pocket of the frame 2 between the tace 7 and the card. The window shields the card and also serves as al filler.

2. A marker comprising a frame having a face part provided with a sight opening` and having the side edges thereof bent outwardly to `form a pair of flanges, prongs formed on said flanges for attachment to a support, a back panel bearing against the edges of saidflanges and held thereby in spaced relation to said face part, said panel being shorter than said face part and forming therewith a pocket having openings at the ends thereof for the insertion of an identi-y fication tag7 and lugs .on the ends of said pael adapted to be bent inwardly across the openings of said pocket.

A marker comprising a frame havinga rectangular yface pait provided with a-sight opening and 'having the side edges thereot` bent outwardly to form a pair of substan tially parallel iianges7 prongs formed onsaid flanges Yl'or attachment to a support, a back panel bearing againstv the edges yof said flanges andV held thereby in substantially parallel spaced relation to said face part, said prongs trictionally engaging the edges of said panel, said face part and panel providing a poclret having openings at the ends ot -said frame for lthe insertion ot an identiiication tag, and lugs on the ends of said panel adapted to be bent inwardly across the openings of said :pocket Signed at Chicago this 19th day of February, '1926.
