Description

Dec. 25, 1934. w. L. BLAND v1,985,227
LICENSE PLATE Patented Dec. 25, 1934 UNITED sTATEs PATENT oFFicE LICENSE PLATE William Leonard Bland, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Application May 1, 1934, Serial No. 723,371
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a license plate specially adapted for motor vehicles of the commercial class, on which may be displayed the serial number, the year of issue and state or province, and to which may be further displayed and permanently aflixed details of classification, such as are required by the different states and provinces from which the license is issued, such as the style of the vehicle, gross and net tonnage, number of cylinders, tires and other specific details that may be required.
These details may be incorporated with the plate in any number of combinations, by afiixing thereto detachable markers in permanent. relation by the licensee when issuing the license and after determining the required details of classification.
The essential object of the device is to embody a number of classiflcations on one license plate, and by means of setting the classification details by separate markers, that when once aflixed may not be altered or changed Without destroying the plate by damage.
In the drawing hereunto annexedz- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the plate,
Figure 2 is a fragmental sectional view showing the plate from the rear.
Figure 3 is a fragmental sectional view of the plate without the markers being aflixed, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the markers.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.
A designates the license plate consisting of a sheet of metal having figures and letters imprinted thereon, and in most respects similar to that now in standard use.
Imprinted on the plate is the serial number, the year of issue and the province by which it is issued.
Formed in from the front face of the plate is an elongated depressed portion B forming substantially a recess having slit openings C formed in the ends, and a series of slit openings c formed at regular intervals along the upper and lower edges of the depressed portion.
The recess formed in the plate is for the purpose of fitting and securing therein a marker or series of markers for various detail of classification as may be required by the licensee.
D designates a marker for fittlng into the plate, consisting of a metal plate having the upper and lower edges folded back and downwardly to form a flange d, with the center portion of the flange cut to form an ear or lug e and adapted to be inserted into the slits c when.
the marker is being set in the recess, and which may then be folded back against the plate for securing it'against lateral displacement and .to firmly hold it in position after the marker has been fitted in the recess.
E designates a keeper or looking bar consisting of a metal strip adapted to be inserted through the slits C in the ends of the recess B, and forced into position under and between the flanges d formed on the back edges of the markers D, by which the markers are further firmly held in position in the recess in fiush relation with the front face of the plate, and independently of being secured in position by the lugs e after being folded back against the plate.
For permanently securing the markers D in Dosition sothat they cannot be removed or changed Without damaging the fastening, the keeper is riveted through the ends to the plate A by rivets F.
Imprinted on the front face of the plate A above the depressed recess B are classification marks which may be varied for different purposes, and on the front face of the markers B are imprinted the details of classification to correspond with the markings on the plate A.
WhileI have shown the recess formed in longitudinal and lateral relation with the Plate, any vertical arrangement may also be adopted.
What I claim as new and desire to ysecure by Letters Patent is:-
1. A license plate of the class specified' consisting of a metal plate having a depressed recess portion formed therein, slits formed in the ends of the said recess portion, a series of markers having flanges formed along the upper and lower edges fitted in said recess portion, a keeper consisting of a metal strip inserted through the slits and under and between the said flanges formed on the said markers and riveted through the ends to the said plate. V
v 2. A license plate of the class specifled consisting of a metal plate having a depressed recess portion formed therewith, slits formed along theL upper and lower edges and through the ends of the said recess portion, a series of markers having flanges formed along the upper and lower back edges, binding lugs formed on the upper and lower edges of said markers, said markers fitted in said recess portion, the said lugs being inserted through the slits in the upper and lower edges of the said recess portion and being bent lback against the said plate, a keeper for permanently aflixing the said markers in the said recess portion, said keeper consisting of a metal strip inserted through the slits formed in the ends of the said recess portion and under and between the flanges fonned on the back of said markers, said keeper being riveted through the ends to the said plate for permanently affixing thereto.
