' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
"JAMES w. ODONNELL, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LIGHTING AND EXTINGUISI-IING DEVICES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,053, dated February 22, 1876; application filed I February 12, 1876.
,.--\js a longitudinal central section, of an imple ment embodying my invention.
A is the stem or handle, provided at one end with a wooden hand-piece, B. It is surmounted by a vessel or holder, 0, to contain oil or alcohol to supply the lamp lighting wick,
' which passes out from the holder 0 through a; downwardly-projecting tube, D. The top of the holder is closed by a screw-cap, F, or equivalent device. The handle B is hollow, and communicates with another downwardlyprojecting tube, Gr, designed to serve as the extinguisher. Each tube D and G is of such length and is so located that it may be inserted into the chimney of the lamp and pro ject downward far enough therein to reach the wick, or to be in such proximity thereto as may be necessary. Under this arrangement the lamp may be lighted and extin- G in the chimney and then blowing into thelower open end of the hollow handle B. This sends a puff of air through the handle and the tube G, which will be sulficient to extinguish the light.
I have described what I deem, on the whole, to be the best arrangement of parts. It is manifest, however, that the arrangement may be somewhat varied without departure from my invention. For instance, the ordinary wax taper can be used in the tube D iiistead of an oil or alcohol fed wick, and the aperture or mouth-piece through which to blow into the tube G may be located at any convenient point on the implement.
Having described ,my invention, I claim The combined lamp lighter and extinguisher, provided with downwardly-projecting lighting and extinguishing tubes, the latter an open tube, through which air may be forced, and
both tubes formed and adapted for insertion into the lamp-chimney from the top thereof, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I havehereuuto signed my name this 10th day of February, A. D.
JAS. W. ODONNELL.
