WVILLIAM H. OLEWLEY, OF PROVIDENCE, RI-IODE ISLAND.
ELECTRIC-LIGHTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,192, dated June 27, 1893.
Application filed April 15, 1893. Serial No. 470.438. (N0 model.)
T0 to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LWILLIAM I-I. OLEWLEY, a citizen of theUnited States of America, residing atProvidence,in thecountyof Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric- Lighting Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to electric lighting devices for use in lighting cigars, lamps, &c., in place of the friction match, and consists in an improved construction for such devices, as hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawing illustrates my invention, being a side view, partly in section.
A designates a toy lamp-post, said post being hollow and having a base B, adapted to be secured to a bar, counter, or other suitable support.
0 indicates a receptacle for alcohol, or other hydro-carbon, said receptacle being formed of glass and being mounted on the post in the usual position occupied by a lamp on its post. ring a, the latter being carried by arms 1), extending from the top of the post A.
On the receptacle O is secured a hollow metallic top-piece D, made to resemble somewhat the top part of a lamp, said top-piece being open, so that a conducting cord maybe passed into the receptacle 0. On the top-piece D, adjacent to its opening, is a short wire having a spark coil 0, in position to form an electric connection with awire being drawn from the receptacle 0, after being dipped therein.
E indicates a battery, or other electric sup The receptacle 0, is supported by a plying device, placed within or below the base of the post A,and connected by a conducting wire cl with the top piece D, said wire passing upward through the hollow post and under one of the arms I), to said top-piece.
F indicates a conducting wire cord connected with battery E and provided with a handle f, a suitable distance from the free end 9 of said cord, which is used as a match.
The receptacle 0 being supplied with alcohol, or other hydro-carbon, a person desiring to light a cigar takes hold of the handle f, and dips the end g of the conducting cord F into the liquid in the receptacle O; in drawing out the cord, a circuit is formed by cord F and the spark coil 0, and a spark is emitted by which the hydro-carbon adhering to the match 9 is ignited so that the latter may be used to light the cigar.
I claim- A toy lamp-post, said post being hollow, a glass receptacle for hydro-carbon, carried by said post, a hollow, metallic top-piece mounted on said receptacle, in combination with a battery with a conducting wire, which passes upward through said hollow post and connects with said top-piece, and a conducting cord connected with said battery, which cord may be used to form a circuit, substantially as set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I have aifixed my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. OLEWLEY.
