My invention relates to pin locks and more particularly to locks for shackle or clevis pins that are used in the assemblage of cable, lumbering or other blocks. The primary objects of the invention are to provide a pin lock whereby the pins thatconnect the several parts of a block may be positively held in place and thus prevent the falling of overhead loads and the consequent damage to life and property. Other objects are to provide a pin lock that is simple, inexpensive and durable, that is self contained within the block, which is shielded against damage, and which may be readily unlocked when desired.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the novel construction, adaptation, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed. These objects are accomplished by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Fig. 5 is a view in side elevation of a shackle showing the device as adapted to lock the pin and nutrtogether;
Fig. 6 is a view in front elevation of the same; and
Fig. 7 is a. view in horizontal section taken on a broken line 7, 7 of Fig. 6.
Referring to the drawings throughout which like reference numeral. designate like parts, the numeral 5 indicates a cable block which may be a lumbering, halyard, or any other kind of block wherein pins are used for connecting the shackles, clevises or other parts with the frame or shell of the block. Said block is provided with the usual upstanding lugs or eyes 6 and 7 and a shackle or clevis 8 is connected therewith by pins 9 passing through said lugs and the eyes 10 of 50 said shackle.
A cross plate 11 is usually interposed bel tween the lugs 6 and 7 and eyes 10 and is provided with holes to correspond with the holes in said lugs and eyes for passage of the pins 9. Two of. such plates are sometimes used las '55 clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The smaller ends of the pinsare burred or enlarged as at 12 and the holes 13 through the lugs 6 are made sufhciently large for passage of said enlarged ends, while the holes 14 60 through the lugs 7 are restricted to only permit the passage ofthe body portion of said pins. The enlarged ends of said pins cannot pass through said holes and it will thus be seen that said pins are prevented from becom- =;,6 5 ing separated from the device. It will be understood that the holes through the plates 11 are made to Correspond with their associated holes through the lugs. f
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2,1 have provided :.70
a casing 15` as an integral partof the block adjacent one of the lugs 6. A key member 16 having a head 17 atone end and a hook portion 18 at its other end passes through a hole in the upper wall 5f said casing. A.` helical 75 spring 19 disposed around the body portion of said key member and interposed between said upper wall of the casing and the headkof thekey member is eXpandingly adapted to retain said member in a normally locked posi- S0 tion as shown in the drawings. In the locked position the eXtreme end portion of the hookA 18 is disposed through a hole 2O in the pin 9.
To unlock the key member 16 it is merely necessary to press upwardly on its head 17 35 suiiiciently to raise the hook end 18 free of the hole 20 as will be readily understood. While I have only shown and described locking means for one of the pins 9 it will be under- 90 stood that the same means may be used for the 1 other pin or pins if desired.
Referring to Figs. 3`and4, the casing 15 is made a part of one of the plates 11, otherwise y the device is substantially the same as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In Figs. 5, 6 and 7 a slot is out in the nut 21 which together with the threaded hole in said nut forms the casing as will be readily understood. It is of primary importance that a casing be provided 1n all 10o adaptable forms of the device for the purpose of serving as a shield for the spring 19.
Having thus described my invention, it being, understood that minor changes may be resorted to Without departing from its scope and spirit, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent' of4 the United-States is:
