SAFETY-CLEVIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 16, 1921.
To @ZZ whom tmag/ concern Y Be it known that we, JOSEPH EDGAR IUNG, residing at 21 Humfray street, Nant-ytfyllon,
near Bridgend, South lVales, and BENJA MiN MORGAN, residing at 18 race, Caerau, near Bridgend, subjects of the United ingdom ot Great ritain and Ireland, have invented a new and useful Safety-Clevis, of which the` folowing is a specication.
ur invention relates to improvements in shackles or couplings for connecting cars. used for the conveyance of minerals mines, in which a movable pin forms the vertical part of a D link, the engagement or disengagement of the shackle beingformed by the loweringr or lifting of the said pin respectively; and the objects of our improvements are first, to prevent the accidental lifting of the pin by providing a locking device in the lower eye of the shackle acting in conjunction with a special form o"r` annular recess on the base of the pin; second, to secure rapid disengagement of the shackle by allowing the pin to be lifted in. all positions, and third, to allow of adjustparts that may The D link may be used in conof like construction` an oval ring, or a drawbar. lVe attain these objects by means of themechanism illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, which refer to the D link, only, in which,
igure l is an elevation ot the D link complete (half full size).
Fig. 2 is a view of the lower eye of the shackle from underneath with the mechanism in place.
ig. 3 is an end elevation of the D link with the eyes in section.
ig. 4 is a view of the base-plate.
ig. 5 iS av view of the rivets which hold the locking in place.
Fig. 6 is a view of the flat springs.
Fig. is a view of the part of the lock and of the adapters.
Fig. 8 is a view of the spiral springs.
l he pin 1 provided with a link 2 `for l1'l'ting, works eely in the round eyes oi the i 3, and is prevented from rising too high by the projection 4. The base of the pin is recessed at 5, and tapered at 6.
e lower portion of the eye 7. is bored to receive the lock 8. The lock 8 consists of two halves, which when assembled are square shaped with projecting rounded Glenavon Ter- South lVales,
"le are aware that prior to our invention.
D links for shackles have been made with a movable pin forming the vertical part oi the D link.
lVc therefore do not claim such nation broadly, but we claim l. The combination, in the D links ot' a shackle for mine cars, ol the recessed and tapered pin l, with the bored and countersunk lock 8, housed in the lower eye T ol the shackle, substantiall.7 as specified.
Q. kn a. shackle the combination ot' the adapters l0, to which are fixed the spiral springs 11, with the lock S, substantialliT as described. n
3. In a shackle the combination of the flat friction springs 13 with the lock 8, substantially :is describec.
4. The D link oi' a lshackle having a recessed and tapered pin 1, conci-,ing with a. ored and countersunk lock 8 which is normally kept closed by the spiral springs 11., and the adapters 10, und kept in position with the assistance ofthe friction springs 13.
