SNATCH BLOCK Filed Jan. 18, 1939 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor Patented July 2, 1940 SNATCH BLOCK :"Ihis invention relates to pulley blocks, and more particularly to what is commonly known in the art asfsnatch blocks generally used extensively in oil fields, logging camps, mines, and ships, and in connection with suitable machinery or automotive trucks, and inassociation with a ropeor cable for pulling or moving heavy loads. For such type of work it is necessary to attach a hook. to the end of the rope or cable, and due to the fact that the hook used and attached to the rope or cable is often too large to pass through the snatch block, it is necessary that the snatch block be so constructed as to be quickly and easily opened for inserting the rope or cable therein, and which also may be closed securely after the rope or cable. has been so inserted.
An object of the present invention is there= fore'to provide a snatch block which will meet all the requirements aforementioned; and the it} invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:

w Referring more in detail to the drawings it will be seen that in the preferred embodiment thereof the snatch block comprises, essentially, a block indicated generally by the reference numeral 5, a hook 6, and a pulley '7.
45 The block 5 is composed of two compleinental sections 8 and 9, each section being in the form of a plate and provided at the head or upper end thereof with a lateral projection, the projection of the section B being indicated by the 50 reference numeral l and the projection of the section 9 being indicated by the reference numeral H.

The head ll of section 9 also has its topand bottom surfaces curvedor disposed onan arc,- 6 and at the underside thereof the head ll of section 9 is formed to provide an arcuate tongue 2! to match the groove! and an arcuate groove 22 to match the tongue 21! of the head lll associated with section 8 of the block.
It will thus be seen that after the shank l3 of hook B has been properly engaged with the head section I!) of section 8 and pulley I placed on the spindle or axle "the free end of the axle I1 is positioned within the opening IS in section 90 9 after which section 9 is rotated about the axle I1 as an axis and relative to section 8 of the block to engage the tongue 2! of section 9 with groove IQ of block section 8, and the groove 22 of section 9 with the tongue 29 of section 8. Thus the sections 8 and 9 are placed opposite one another and in assembled position with the head I I of section 9 closing the slot IE to thereby retain the shank l3 of hook 6 within the opening 2. and the pulley l confined on the axle I! 0 between the sections 8 and 9.
Section 9 on the outer side thereof is also provided with a recess 23 in which is accommodated a latch member 24 pivoted within the recess 23 as at 25.
The latch member 24 is provided adjacent one end thereof with a lug or extension 26 that projects into the slot [6 through a hole IS in the bottom of the slot l6 and thus this latch member serves to retain the sections 8 and 9 against ro-- tative movement relative to one another.
With the sections 8 and 9 of the block assembled the projection 26 of the latch 24 is normally urged into position within the slot l6 through the medium of acoil spring 21 accomtion through the medium of the latch, 24 and in modated within the recess 23 and bearing against an end of the latch member 24 as clearly shown in Figure 2.
It will thus be seen that in use, when it is desired to engage a cable or rope with the pulley 1 pressure is applied to the latch 24 to move the latch to a released position whereupon block section 9 may then be rotated relative to,section 8 to separate the section 9 from the section 8. With the section 9 so displaced a cable may, in an obvious manner, be engaged with the pulley I aiter which the section 9 of the block is rotated to re-engage tongue 2| with groove lg, and tongue 20 with groove 22, the sections of the block being then secured in assembledposia manner hereinbefore described.
It is thought that a clear'understanding' or the construction, manner of assembling the snatch block, and the utility and advantages of such a snatch block structure and. assembly will be had without a more detailed description.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
l. A snatch block assembly comprising a; block proper composed of a pair of complemental sections each including a. plate-like body and an integral head, the head of each section being arcuate and provided with an arcuate tongue and an arcuate groove, an axle extending laterally irom one section and the other section having a hole therein for receiving the axle, said sections being rotatable relative to one another on said axle t'o efiect engagement or disengagement of the. tongue and groove of one section with the tongue and groove of the complemental section, thehead of one of said sections being provided with a through opening and a slot extending from one side, of said head inwardly to merge with said opening, a hook having a shank insertible into said opening through said slot, said shank being provided on the free end thereof with a retaining head, and the head of the second-named block section serving to close said slot for retaining the shank of said hook within said opening, a pulley supported by the axle arid latch means carried by one section and engaging a part of the other section to prevent relative movement of the sections.
2. A snatch block assembly comprising a block proper composed of a pair of complemental sections each including a plate-like body and an integral head, the head of each section being arcuate and provided with an arcuate tongue and an arcuate groove, one of said sections also being provided. with V a lateral pulley-accommodating axle, and the other of said sections being provided' with an aperture to accommodate the free end of said axle, said sections being rotatable relative to one another to effect engagement or disengagement of the tongue and groove of one section with the tongue and groove of the complemental section, the head of one of said sections being provided with a through opening and a slot extending from one side of said head inwardly to'merge with said opening, and a hook having a shank insertible into said opening through said slot, said shank being provided on the free end thereof with a retaining head, and the head of the second-named block section serving to close said slot for retaining the shank of said hook within said opening, and a springbiased latch member pivotally mounted on the seccndmamed section and provided with a projection accommodated within said slot and co operable with the side walls of the slot for securing the block sections against relative rotative movement. 7
