Description

Dec. 3, 1929. M. HIRSCHMAN LIGHTPROOF WINDOW CLOSURE Filed Jan. 21, 1927 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 3, 1929 PATENT OFFICE MAX HIRSCHMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LIGHTPROOF WINDOW CLOSURE Application filed January 21, 1927. Serial No. 162,628.
This invention relates to a light-proof window closure of the rollin type.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the character described adapted to be applied in the opening or over the sashes of windows of building walls or partitions whereby the light passing through said openings may be partially or completely cut off or restored as desired,
easily and quickly.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described comprising a complete structure including a rolling shade or curtain, which structure may be fitted as a unit into a window opening or against the window frame over the sashes for controlling the amount of light passing through said openings or sashes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described comprising few and simple parts, neat in appearance, durable in construction, relatively cheap to manufacture, and practical and efflcient to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exen'iplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a front, elevational view of the improved light-proof window closure embodying the invention applied to the frame of a window opening.
Fig. 2 is a rear, elevational view of the device dismounted.
Figs. 3 and 4: are cross-sectional views taken on lines 33 of Fig. 1 and et4 in Fig.
2, respectively.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 10 denotes a light-proof closure unit embodying the invention and is shown in Figs. 1 and 3 applied to the frame 11 of a window opening 11 Said unit may be of any well understood construction but is here shown as being formed of sheet metal comprising a frame structure 12 having a central opening 12 and rearwardly ofl'set flanges 13 extending i longitudinally from the opposite side edges and top edge of the structure. Said flanges are preferably formed by folding the sheet material forming the frame structure rearwardly and outwardly, as is clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 1. Any suitable means for demountably attaching the frame structure 12 over the frame opening 11 may be provided,
such as screws 14 passing through said flanges 12 Extending transversely the length of the frame structure 12 on the front side thereof between the upper ends of the flanges 13, a casing 15 is provided to form a compartment in which a spring roller 16 is mounted on suitsuitable pliable coating, such as oilcloth, imitation leather, and like inexpensive but durable sheeting. The opaque sheet 18 is adapted to unwind and extend against the edge portions 12 of the central opening 12 on the rear side thereof, said sheet and edge portions 12 being proportioned sothat said edge portions form a substantial-lap to make a lightproof joint between it and said sheet.
For adjusting the sheet and operating the winding of the roller, a pull cord 19 is provided having one end thereof anchored to the middle of a cross-bar 2O enclosed in a hem 18 provided at the leading end of said sheet.
Said cord 19 is threaded through a releasable clamping pulley 21 mounted on the crosspiece of the frame structure 12 opposite the casing 15. The casing is preferably made so that access may be had from the front side of the unit for installing, removing and replacing the roller 16 and the sheet 18, and for adjusting the spring winding operation of the roller when required. To this end, a removable cover 22 is provided on the casing 15 and as here shown is slidably mounted in position and secured in any suitable manner as by a suitable fastening means 23, such as a screw and winged nut. Said cover conceals the roller 16 and sheet 18 in the compartment and adds to the neat appearance of the unit.
The operation of the device will now be apparent. WVhere it is desired to partially or completely out off the light for photographic or other purposes, the unit with the roller and sheet assembled as shown in the drawing 15 mounted over a window openmg and is secured in position by means of the screws 14,. The sheet maybe easily and quickly raised or lowered and adjusted in effective position by manipulating the pull cord 19 in the well understood manner, for partially or completely cutting off or restoring the light passing through the central opening 12 of the unit.
For guiding and retaining the sheet against the rear side of the rim portions of the opening, strips 23 may be provided to extend inwardly from the longitudinally extending flanges so that said strips and the adjacent frame structure form grooves 25 for receiving and confining the longitudinal edges of said sheet. By providing said grooves, possible infiltrations of light at the joint between the sheet and the frame is eliminated.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the r accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus descrlbed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent inwardly projecting spaced flanges adapted 1 to receive edge portions of a curtain for regulating the amount of light passing through said device.
2. A device of the character described adapted to be fitted over a window opening comprising a frame formed of sheet material having a central opening, side flanges extending longitudinally from opposite sides of said frame adapted to receive fastening means for securing the device in position over said window opening, a casing extending across one end of said frame between said flanges, said casing adapted to support a spring roller therein, and a removable cover for said casing, said frame being formed with inwardly prOJecting spaced flanges adapted to receive edge portions of a curtain for regulating the amount of light passing through said device, portions of said frame adjacent said casing being cut out to permit insertion of said spring roller into said casing.
In testimony whereof I a HiX my signature.
MAX HIRSCHMAN.
