This invention has for an object to construct a handle for butcher or similar knives, in which the gripping members of the handle are formed to provide a guard which will serve to prevent the blade slipping or being forced into or through the users hand.

A further object is to provide a knife handle in which the gripping members thereof are formed with integral projecting spurs at their forward ends adapted to be secured against opposite sides of the rear end portion of the knife blade to reinforce the latter and mate to form a guard for preventing the blade from slipping or being forced into or through the users hand.

A still further object is to provide the inner faces of the projecting spurs with shoulders to engage the edge of the blade and insure a firm mounting of the gripping members on the shank of the blade.

Another object is to construct a knife handle, in which the gripping members of the handle will be fastened to the shank of the blade so securely as to minimize loosening or shifting between the gripping members and the shank.

Still another object is to provide a handle, wherein the gripping members may be readily adjusted to proper position on the shank of the knife blade, and wherein the construction may be cheaply and accurately manufactured.

The invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.

The invention is shown as applied to a butcher knife having a blade 5 provided with a fiat shank 6, the gripping members 7 of aluminum or other suitable material being disposed on opposite sides of the shank 6, and being secured thereto by means of rivets 8 seated in the gripping members and passing through holes 9 in the latter and holes in the shank.

Formed integral with the forward ends of the gripping members 7 are depending spurs or lugs 10 adapted to be secured against opposite sides of the rear end portion 11 of the knife blade to reinforce the latter, and being mated and of a length to project below the edge of the blade to form a guard engageable with the users hand to prevent the blade from slipping or being forced into or through the users hand. The spurs 10 are formed on their inner faces with shoulders 12 adapt- 7 ed to engage the edge of the blade and insure a firm mounting of the gripping members on the shank of the blade.

In order to minimize loosening or shifting between the gripping members and the shank, and to facilitate adjustment of the gripping members to proper position on the shank, the gripping members may be formed with pairs of mating or abutting inwardly projecting lugs 13 and 14 adapted to lit in deep notches 15 and 16 provided respectively in the back or upper edge of the inner end portion of the blade 5 and in the rear end edge of the shank 6, each lug being of a thickness equal to onehalf the thickness of the blade and its shank or tang. In this way, the rivets 8 are not es pecially relied upon to prevent lateral shifting of the gripping members.

From the above, it will be seen that the construction is simple and well adapted to secure the results sought.

Minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

What I claim is:

1. A knife handle comprising a blade having a shank, gripping members disposed and secured on opposite sides of said shank and the rear end of the blade and depending integral spurs on the forward ends of the gripping members secured against 0 posite sides of the rear end of the blade said lade having a notch in the back edge of the rear end thereof opposite said spurs, and a pair of opposed lugs projecting inwardly from the forward end of the gripping members and fitting in said notch.

A knife handle comprising a blade vhaving a shank, gripping members disposed and secured on opposite sides of said shank and the rear end of the blade, depending integral spurs on the forward ends of the gripping members secured against opposite sides of the rear end of the blade, said blade having a notch in the back edge of the rear end thereof opposite said spurs, a pair of opposed lugs projecting inwardly from the forward end of the gripping members and fitting in said notch, said shank having anotch in the rear end edge thereof, and a further pair of opposed lugs projecting inwardly from the rear ends of the gripping members and fitting in the last-named notch.

3. A knife handle comprising a blade having a shank, gripping members disposed and secured on opposite sides of said shank and the rear end of the blade, depending integral spurs on the forward ends of the gripping members secured against opposite sides of the rear end of the blade, said blade having a notch in the back edge of the rear end thereof opposite said spurs, a pair of opposed lugs projecting inwardly from the forward end of the grippin members and fitting in said notch, said shank having a notch in the rear end edge thereof, and a further pair of opposed lugs projecting inwardly from the rear ends of the gripping members and fitting in the last-named notch, the lugs of each pair I being disposed in abutting relation.
