Description

UNITED STATES GEORGE MERRILL, OF NEWYORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ISAAC F. DI'BSON,l
PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,735, dated February 22, 1876; application. filed January 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE MERRILL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines or Apparatus for Pressing Meats, Vegetables, or various other matters, or for pressing and stamping butter; and I do hereby declare the same' to be fully described inthe following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of' which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 a vertical section, and Fig. 3 a horizontal section, of a press of my improved kind. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a butterstamp to be used with such press, and inthe place of its rcmovable perforated bottom 5 and Fig. 5, a per spective view of the stand I.
In such drawings,A denotes a strong hollow cylinder or case,`open at each end, and provided at its middle with a handle, a, hinged to it so as to fold against its outer surface or turn out at right angles therewith. It also has at or near each end a pair \of loops or rings, B B and B B', which are hinged to its outer surface, one pair,B B,beingintended to loop over and upon the ends of a bar, O,'extending diametrically across the top ofthe case, and having a long screw, D, screwed into and through its Vmiddle and intothe case, and against a metallic disk or follower, E, arranged therein as represented. To the lower end of the case there is a movable anged bottom, F, perforated with numerous holes, a, and provided with two ears, b b, to enter the lower pair of rings or clasps B B', which, when looped on the said ears, serve with them to confine the bottom to the case. In the place of this perforated bottom the butter-stamp, also provided with ears, as shown at b b', may be used when it may be desirable to employr the press for pressing and stamping butter or other matter. Within the case is anotherhollow but prismatic case or strainer, G, having its sides foraminous, it, at the junctions of its sides, resting against the inner periphery of the case. The object of this prismatic strainer G is to facilitate the removal of liquid from the matter to 'be pressed.
bottom.
Instead of being prismatic the strainer may be corrugated vertically, so as to form channels lengthwise in it, from end to end of it.
In preserving meat or other matter a solid plate or a woven-wire disk may be used in the movable bottom to-coverl its holes, if desirable.
By turning the screw, which is provided with a hand-wheel, h, so as to force the follower E down within the foraminous case,
meat or other matter, when therein, may be pressed.
The stand for the press is shown at I, also in perspective view iu Fig. 5. It is a Haring ring, provided with rabbets fand notches g g, to` receive the bottom of the press. said press is in an upright position, also has larger notches h h' made in it, all heilig as represented, these latter notches being to receive the press when in a horizontal position.
The bottom is perforated to allow liquid from a material, while being pressed, to escape. When fat is pressed from the -meat it will pass both through the inner case and the 3. The annular stand I, provided with theV rabbetsf and notches g h', arranged in it as, and for use with the press as explained.
GEO. MERRILL.
