Description

Nov. 19, 1929. J. E. OBRIEN ET AL ADVERTISING DEVICE Filed June 16, 1927 wueutoz E. 023
James I @51 mm Patented Nov. 19, 1929 JAMES E. OBRIE N, OF BRGOKLYN, AND THOMAS E. GBRIEN, F RIGEMOND HILL, NEW YORK anvnnrrsrne nnvron This invention relates to an advertising device, and particularly to an advertising device in the form of a scales.
An object is to provide an advertising device of the kind referred to and including a scales platform upon which a person desiring to be weighedmust stand in a position such that While viewing the indication of his weight he will also, almost of necessity, view the advertising matter.
A further object is to arrange the advertising matter in such form that the weight of the person upon the scales platform will automatically setthe advertising matter in suitable motion. I i f A further and more detailed object is to ar range the advertising matter upon one or more endless belts so arranged that the belt or belts will travel and display advertising items of various kinds through an inspection window. 7
further object is to provide a suitable type of inspection window adapted for improving the appearance of the advertising material, and which is preferably also adapted for providing inspection of the weight indication practically at the same time.
Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, coinbinati ns, rangements of parts and applications of principles constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claim.
In the drawing which presents a perspec.
tive view of a scales constructed in accordance with this invention, a part of the structure being broken away for better illustration of details, the reference character L indicates a base upon which is a depressible platform G. Rising from the base L is a column or standard 1 at the upper end of which is a head H having a window as 2 therein which is at, or approximately at, the eye level of a person standing upon the platform Gr.
Within the head H is arranged any suit- 1927. Serial No. 199,176.
able type of mechanism for indicating the weight of the person standing upon the platform, such mechanism being indicated generally by the reference character 3 and including a graduated or other member 4 which is movable with respect to the window 2, said mechanism being connected with the platform G by means of a rod 5 extending downwardly therefrom through the standard 1, the arrangement being of the usual Well known class in which when a person stands upon the platformG the graduated or like member l will present to the window 2, for observation by the person standing upon the platform, a figure corresponding to the weight of the person.
Arranged also within the head is a pair of endless belts as 6 and 7 each carrying a series of advertising or like items as 88 thereon spaced apart along the respective belts and the belts being disposed with respect to the window 2 so that movement of the belts will present the advertising items one after the other for inspection through the window.
These belts may be supported and operated in any appropriate manner but for convonicnce they are shown to be mounted upon suitable rollers 9-9 and 10-10, the rollers 9. 9 being carriedupon a relatively upper shaft as 11 extending horizontally of the head and the rollers 1010 being carried upon a shaft 12 parallel with shaft llat the lower part of the head.
The belt 6 engages about the rollers 9 and 10 at one side of the weight indicating member twhile the belt 7 engages about rollers 9 and lOat the opposite side of the weight indicating member.
In order to operate the belts a suitable electric motor as 13 is shown, by way of illusstration, to be arranged within the head and connected directly with the shaft 12 so that the'motor will drive said shaft and the rollers 10-1O carried thereby, the shaft 11 and nits rollers 99 being in this instance mereiy idlers'.
Any suitable bearing supports may be provided for the two shafts.
Attached to the connecting rod 5, for
, the contact finger 1 1, and a wire 18 leads from the contact finger to the opposite side of the source.
From this arrangement it follows that whenever a person imposes his weight upon the platform G to move the connecting rod 5 he will not only operate the weight indicating member 1 for indicating his weight but he will at the same time involuntarily close contact beween the fingers 14; and 15, due to the movement of the connecting rod, and thus energize the motor and start operation of the advertising mechanism.
The advertising mechanism may continue to operate as long as the person remains upon 1 the platform or if desired it may be automatically stopped after a given period. by any'suita-ble circuit breaking mechanism not illustrated.
While the window 2 may be of any appropriate type it is preferably suitably formed,
as for instance by being appropriately convexed as shown,to give it a magnifying quality such that the advertising material upon the belts will be magnified and thus made iore prominent and. attractive to the observer. The magnification may also apply to the fingers upon the weight indicating member.
It will. be apparent that although the drawing herewith illustrates two separate belts nevertheless only a single belt, or any number of belts, may be employed as may be pre ferred, and that in fact if desired-the advertising items may be displayed upon some other kind of support than a belt.
A lamp as 9 may be provided if desired ar- *anged within the head for illuminating the interior of the head and particularly the advertising matter upon the belts, as well as for illuminating the weight indicating element.
This lamp may be arranged to be continually lighted, or it may be connected so as to be illuminated only while a person is standing upon the platform G in which instance the source of current for-the lamp could include 7 a wire as connected wit-lithe wire 16, and a second wire as 21 connected with the wire '17,'the lamp being thusin shunt with the motor 13 so that the lamp will be lighted only when current'is being supplied for operating the motor, that is when. a person is standing upon the platform.
As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the following claim, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description, or shown in the accompanying drawings, shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is An advertising device comprising a casing, a scales platform, a weight indicating member within the casing connected to be moved by said platform, a pair of rotatably mounted shafts spaced apart in parallel relation also within the casing, a pair of endless belts extending about said shafts being spaced apart along the length of said shafts and disposed one at each side/of the weight indicating member also within the'casing, a motor connected to rotate one of said shafts to thereby cause travel of the belts about said shafts, the casing having an opening therethrough through which portions of the belts and weights indicating member are visible, said belts being adapted to carry advertising material thereon visible through said opening, and means automatically operable byf movement of the platform to operate said motor. I
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
