Description

Nov; 12, 1929. w. D. ANTRIM OVEN DOOR HINGE Filed Ma 6, 1929 Patented Nov. 12, 1929 UNITED sTArss mm mm WILLIAM D. ANTRIM, OF GLOUCESTER, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO ROBERTS & MAN- DER STOVE COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A. CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA OVEN-DOOR HINGE Application filed May 6, 1929. Serial No. 360,276.
My invention relates to certain improvements in the spring hinges for the oven doors of ranges as disclosed in the patent granted to C. V. Roberts and K. O. Farnsworth on the 11th day of November, 1924, No. 1,515,413.
The object of the present invention is to provide means for readily securing the springs in position, and to provlde a cover plate and easing which enclose the movable parts of the door hinge.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a rear view of, a portion of the front frame of a range, with the door in the closed position;
' Fig. 2is a sectional plan view on the line mechanism. The door 3 fits the opening in the frame 1. On the door are two rearwardly extending arms 4 which carry the hinge pintles 5. The arms are shaped as shown in Fig. 3, to allow the door to freely open and close and conceal the hinge when in the closed position.
On each hinge pintle is a coiled spring 6. One end of each spring is attached to its pintle, while the other end 7 extends through a bayonet slot 8 in the outer wall 9 of an enclosing box 2. The outer end of the spring is formed into an eye to provide a hand-hold, by grasping which the end of the'spring can be readily inserted in the bayonet slot or re-- inwardly projecting flange 14 on the box by klzolts 15, the flange being slotted to receive the Lugs 16 on the box hold the hinge elements 1n a central position when the door is in the open position. A projection 17 on each pintle extends past its lug as shown, and is notched to receive one ofthe springs which must be secured to the pintle.
.While my invention has been described as a door hinge of a gas range," it will be understood that it can be used also as a hinge of an oven door fora gas or electricrange, or 1n fact any placewhere 1t is desired to conceal v a the hinge, and to provide for closing the door whenin partially open position or allowing the door to remain open when in the open position. I
I claim: 1. The combination in a frame, of a door havingrearwardly extending projections,"
pintles on said extensions; a coiled spring on each plntle, one end of the spring being secured to the pintle; a box enclosing the hinge mechanism, the rear wall of the box having a bayonet slot therein, and the free end of the spring extending through the slot, the slot allowing the spring to be retained in position or readily removed from the slot when it is desired to detach the door fromthe frame.
2. The combination in a door, frame, of a door having rearwardly extending projections; horizontalpintles on each projection;
a coiled spring on each pintle, the spring being secured to the pintle; a box enclosing the spring mechanism, the rear Wall of the box having bayonet slots therein through- "which the free end of each spring extends;
and an enclosing casing for the box and the ends of the spring, said casing being secured to thebox. 7
3. The combination in a door frame, of a door having rearwardly extending projections; horizontal pintles on each projection; a coiled spring on each pintle, the spring being secured to the pintle; a box enclosing the spring mechanism, the rear wall of the box havin bayonet slots therein through which the free end of the spring extends; an
enclosing casing for the box and the ends of the spring, said Casing being secured to the box; and a detachable cap plate secured ;to
