err rates HENRY A. CHEVOLA, OF NEW YORK, AND CHARLES B. MOSS-I,
NEW YORK.
Pr rrm or BROOKLYN,
BRACKET FOR DOORS.
Application filed May 14,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HnNRY ALEXANDER Crrnvo-LA and CHARLES B. Mossi, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Bronx, borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York. and Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, respectively, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Brackets for Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brackets for doors.
More particularly, this invention relates to brackets for doors of ovens and thelike and has for its object to provide im nroved means for automatically moving the door to its closing position and for retaining the door in itstully opened position.
In accordance with our invention, the most preferred form thereof comprises a pair of brackets for enclosing a spirally coiled spring coacting with a lug carried by the oven door for automatically closing the oven door upon release and for frictionally holding the door in its fully opened position against the action of such closing spring.
Further features and objects of theinvention will be more fully understood from the following description and the accom-' panying drawings, in' which Fig. 1 is a detail perspective view ol range oven embodying our invention, showing the oven door in its closed position;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the oven door in its fully open position;
Fig. 3 is a detail, inner face elevation of the bracket per se on an enlarged scale;
Fig. 4 is an outer edge view of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is an outer face elevation of Fig. 3 and Fig. 6 is an inner edge view of Fig. 3.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the oven is indicated generally at 10; the oven door 11 is shown pivoted at its lower edge by means of the oppositely disposed, pivot lugs 12, received respectively in suitable openings 13, see Fig. 3, of the oppositely related brackets 14. c
As indicated in Figs. 3 to 6, inclusive, each bracket is a hollow casting and com- 1921. swarm). 469,745.
prises a body casting the inner edge 15 of which is castintegrally with the outer face I 16, in turn cast integrally with the outer edge portions 17, 18, 19. -The outer plate is shown of a separate casting, and is plate 20 afiords ready access to the interior I of the curved slot 22 formed in the casting between the upper outer edge ofthe circula r portion17 and the inner circular partition 23, indicated in Fig. 3, whereby the spirally coiled springq2 l may be readily inserted within its curved housing 22. Upon positioning the plate 20on the body. casting of the bracket, thespring 24 is located to coact with one ofthe oppositely projecting lugs 25, extending laterallyof thedoor 11 through the circular slot 26 of the housing 22. 1
In Fig. 3 we have shownthe positionot the spring 245 when the oven door 11 is fully closed, the lug 25 of'the oven door 11 inv such position being located at the head of the housing 22., Upon manually forcing the door 11 toward its open position, the coil 24: is more and more compressed and' the lug 25 of the oven door 11 is moved along-the slot 26 and approaches the rear of the housing 22.-
Horizontally arrangedv adjacent the rear of the opening 26,]we provide the friction, spring pressed means 27 for retaining the door 11 in its fully open position, as is indicated in Figs. '3 and 4t and 5; such retaining means 27 in the construction illustrated comprises thehousing member 28 secured by the set screws 29 to the outer face 17 of the body casting of the bracket, within which housing 28 is received the pin 30 having thepointed or reduced head 31 projecting beyond the housing 28 and pressed by the coiled spring 32, see Fig. 4, adjustably held within the housing 28 by means of the threaded plug 33 Upon moving tllfiOVQll door to its fully open position as indicated in Fig. 2, the lateral edge of the door llengages the head 31. of the pin 80 forcing the same interiorly of the housing 28 and against its spring 32, whereby the door is frictionally held by lock Upon forcing manually or by means of the foot the door 11 upwardly, the door will be released from frictional engagement with the oppositely disposed pins and is automatically closed by the springs 24; of the brackets in its fully closed position.
Such bracketconstruction affords a convenient support for the gas pipe 35, leading to the burners 36 of the oven, as by means of the yoke member 37 constructed, see Figs. 3 and '5, to be countersunk on the edge face portion 18 and held in position by means of the retaining screws 38.
The bracket is advantageous in that the same is of markedly reduced over-all dimensions, is rigid in construction and capable of enclosing stout springs of relatively short length. .Our construction is also advantageous in that the same can be readily mounted adjacent the hinge or pivot of the door and. does not extend within tle range of movement of the hand or foot of the operator. 1
The invention is also of advantage in lending itself to ornamental outline, in marked cont 21st to closure members heretofore proposed.
Whereas we have described our invention by refereneeto specific forms thereof it will be understood that many changes and modifications may be made from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
WVe claim:
1.. The combination with a door of an oven or the like, said door being provided with a hinge lug, of a bracket having an opening for receiving said hinge lug, said bracket comprising a recessed member, a coil spring disposed within said recessed member and coacting with said oven door for closing the same and spring-pressed retaining means carried by said bracket for holding the oven door in its fully opened position.
2. The combination with a door of an oven or the like, said door being provided with a hinge lug, said door being further provided with an extension element, of a bracket having an opening for receiving said hinge lug, said bracket comprising a curved recessed member, said member havopening receiving said extension element, a curved coil spring disposed'in said curved recessed member and coacting withsaid ex tension element for closing the same and spring-pressed retaining means earned by said bracket for holdingthe oven door in its fully opened position.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification this lth day of May, 1921.
