Description

Nov. l2, 1929. R. KRASBERG VENTILATING SASH FASTENER Original Filed June 27, 1927 all IZ//Am on the line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Patented Nov.r 12, 1929 UNITED ASTATES RUDOLF KRASBERG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS VENTILATING-SASH FASTENER Application led J'une 27, 1927, Serial No. 201,670. Renewed April 3, 1929.
This invention has for its object to provide a simple, cheap and eiiicient sash-fastener of the type which permits of a partial lopening of the window for ventilation purposes, a fur- 5 ther object of the invention being to provide a device of this character which operates automatically to limit the relative opening 'movement of window sashes and requires manual manipulation to permit full opening of the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth the parts of which become interengaged as soon as one of the sashes is moved a distance substantially equal to that required to cause the lower edge of the lowerrail of the lower sash to become flush with the top surface of the inner sill of the window.
Other objects of the invention will be readily understood from the following description.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings `wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in elevation of a portion of a conventional slide-sash window7 latehing from within the building, equipped with a sash-fastener constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical section Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2. f
Figure 4 is a detail vertical section on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
The device comprises a bell crank lever 1 pivotally mounted at its elbow portion between t-he flanges 2 of the plate 3 which is mounted upon the top face of the upper rail a of the lower sash 5. One end portion of the lever 1 is of greater length and weight than the other end portion thereof and terminates in a projection 6 which normally (by gravity) projects over the upper face of the lower rail 7 of the upper sash 8, said lever being sufliciently loosely pivotally mounted to permit it to swing freely.
Pivotally secured at its upper end to the inner face of a side rail of the upper sash is a sheet metal plate 9, the respective end portions of which extend angularly of each other, said plate being of such length and its pivotal connection with the side rail of the upper sash so disposed that the lower end of said plate normally rests upon the upper face of the lower rail 7 and, when so disposedthe lower end portion 1() of said plate 9 is verticallydisposed. A continuous longitudinal slot 11 in said plate 9 follows the contour thereof in parallelism with the side edges thereof, said slot terminating short of the terminals of said plate.
The position of the bell-crank lever 1 on the upper rail of the lower sash is such, with respect to the lower end portion of said plate 9, that the end portion of said lever carrying the projection 6 projects through the vertically disposed end portion of the slot 11 of the plate 9 when the sashes are in closed or substantially closed position and said plate 9 is in its ynormal position. The pivotal as-- sociation of said plate 9 with the side rail of the upper sash must necessarily be also sufliciently loose to permit said plate 9 to be maintained by gravity in its normal position.
The several above-described elements being in relatively normal positions, it will be seen that upon raising the lower sash or lowering the upper sash a distance substantially equal to the depth of the shoulder provided by the outer edge of the inner portion of the window sill, the projection 6 of the lever 1 will become disposed just above the vertical portion of the slot 11 and in engaging relation to the angularly disposed upper end portion of the plate 9 and thus the said lever 1 may not be moved out of such engaging relation without returning the sashes to approximately their relative v closed positions. Further relative A opening movement of said sashes will cause the lever 9 to contact with an inner side wall of the slot 11 and thus turn the plate 9 on its pivot until it becomes substantially inverted and the lever 9 engages the normally lower end wall of the slot 11 as shown in dotted lines in Figure l.
If, however, prior to effecting relative opening movement of the sashes, the lever l is moved to the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, and is held in this position until the projection 6 is disposed above the vertical portion of the slot 11, the sashes may be moved to full open position, the lever 1 being released after passing the point last abovementioned. Upon restoring the sashes to closed position the lever 1 will be turned on its pivot to position to slide over the inner face of the portion of the plate 9 disposed in its path by said portion and will then return to the normal position shown in Figure 2. Consequently, unless the lever 1 is intentionally operated to permit full opening of the window the latter ,can be opened only to the limited extent indicated. Obviously this limited opening is intended to permit ventilat-ion and safeguard `against burglary.
For low cost and ease of manufacture, the plate 3 consists of two equal portions each of which is provided with a flange 2, the latter being secured against separation and their relative pivotal movement resisted by means of the rivet 12 having a middle portion 13 of greater diameter than the end portions thereof, said portion 13 being of somewhat greater length than the thickness of the lever 1 of which it constitutes the pivot, the said portion `13 thus functioning as pivot and spacing element.
Preferably the side portions of the plate 3 are so formed that they present straight edge portions 14 inwardly of their extreme inner and outer edge portions, lthe latte-r being preferably disposed to overlap the upper face of 'the lower rail ofthe upper sash in order to prevent manipulationof the lever 1 by inserting a knife blade or the like through the space between the opposing faces of the meeting rails of the sashes from .the exterior of the building'and, to this end, the two parts of the plate 3 adjacent the flanges 2 are provided with contacting meeting edges to prevent manipulation of the lever 1 by insertion of a wire in place of the knife blade or the like. The edge portions 14 opposing the upper sash constitute gauges to guide the person securing the plate 3 in properly positioning the latter on the lower sash with respect to the inner or meeting edge of its upper or meeting rail.
