`IMPROVEMENT IN ILLUMINATING-SIGNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,486, dated February 15, 1876 application led I September 8, 1875.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. .MCLEWEIE of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new' and. useful Improvements in Illuminating-A Signs; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof,
which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. A
This invention. relates to illnminatingsigns in which glass of a circular or globular form is used, having for its object to improve the construction of the same, whereby the sameis more efcient, and each glass removed at pleasure to be cleaned or replaced; and it consists in combining, with a frame,fa series ot' round bars ot' different colors, and, in connection with v the same, a perforated plate and a box, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

This frame Gis provided with a series of diierent-colored .round glass bars, D, set at an anglevn the frame. B represents a gasburner in they center ofthe box.
In signs of this kind, where it is desirable to have a circular or globular form of a glass illuminating-sign, the glass has heretoforeV been all in one piece, making it didicult to clean the same; but by this improvement the detachable frame can be removed, and each bar removed and cleaned separately with little trouble; and, besides, if any ot' the .bars should become broken, as many bars as are broken or injured can be readily replaced Without injury to the others; and this sign further allows the letter to be shown of one" coloralone, or 'of as many dii'erent colors as may be desired, and which may be changed at pleasure.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-` 1. The case A and plate C', in combination with tlre frame C, provided with a series of differently-colored round. glass bars, D, placed at an angle in the frame O, and the buttons a, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The plate f C', provided with letters or figures, in combination with the frame C and a series of round bars, D D, ofdierent colors,
the lbox A, and burners B, substantially as and for the purpose described.
