Description

Nev. 5, 1929. J. HUBER ET AL WINDOW AWNING 23206 iii oft? Filed Aug. 23. 1926 Patented Nov. 5, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN HUBER, OF ST. LOUIS, AND MEYER ROSENTRETER, UNIVERSITY CITY,
MISSOURI WINDOW Application filed August 23 This invention relates to an improvement in awnings and has for its primary object the purpose of providing an awning of the roller type which is simple and inexpensive in its manufacture and in the hanging or mounting thereof.
Another object of the invention is in providing an awning with improved means for rolling and unrolling the awning and for permitting the lower portion of the awning to swing outwardly in a projecting manner.
A further object of the invention is in providing the awning with an improved frame structure which is co-operable withthe awnl5 ing in the raising and lowering operations.
Other and further objects will appear in the specification and be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, exemplifying the invention, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of this improved awning showing it in a lowered position.
, Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section taken approximately on the line 11-11 of Fig. 1. I
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal section taken on the line IIIIII of Fig. 2 showing the winding spool for the 130 awning roller and the manner of securing it to the roller.
Referring by numerals to the accompanyings, 1 designates a window frame and secured to the upper cross member 2 of said frame are a pair of brackets 3 for the support of the pins 4 of a roller 5, and secured on said roller at one end is an awning fabric 6.
Secured to the window frame 1 is a guiding frame 7, said frame being made of a single material length bent so as to form a pair of vertically disposed guiding legs 8 each having a foot 9 formed at its lower end, and securing means such as 10 pass through each foot for securing the lower end of said legs to the window frame. The upper end of each leg 8 is bent outwardly from the window frame as designated at 11, and extending outwardly from each bent portion 11 is a downwardly extending portion 12, said portions 12 pa 'allelling the legs 8 and joining AWNING Serial No. 130,854.
dow frame 1, the upper ends of said legs being held away from the frame 1 by the securing means 15, whereas the lower ends of said legs 8 are held away from the frame by the bent portion 16 of each le Slidably mounted on each leg 8 is a shoe 17 ,each shoe having a pair of ears 18, and secured between the ears of each shoe by a pin or bolt 19 is a leg 20 of a projecting frame 21, said legs 20-being joined by the horizontally disposed cross portion 22 of the projecting frame 21.
Mounted on one end ofthe roller 5 is a winding spool 23, said spool having a projecting portion 24f formed in the hub thereof for securing the spool to the roller 5. In
mounting thespool 23 on the roller 5, the
bore of the spool is approximately of the same size or diameter of the reduced portion 24 of the roller, and as the projection 24: is disposed adjacent one side of the roller, the spool when mounted on one end of the roller and forced thereon will cause the projection 24 to bite into the roller 5'which is ordinarily a wooden roller.
i As aforementioned one end of the awning fabricfS is secured to the roller 5, whereas the lower end of the awning fabric is secured at 25 to thecross portion 22 of the projecting frame 21, and a tape length 26 is secured to one end to the spool 23 for revolving the roller 5 in a winding direction.
hen an awning of this improved character has been secured to a window frame or door frame as described, and it is desired to lift or wind the awning from the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the tape 26 is engaged and pulled, and as one end of the tape is secured to the spool 23, the unwinding of the tape from the spool will cause the 95 roller 5 to turn, thereby rolling up the awning fabric 6, and as the legs 20 of the projecting frame 21 are pivoted at 19 to respective shoes 17, the projectin frame 21 will be swung upwardly to an approximate vertical 100
