The invention relates to means for binding Within ay cover a plurality of separately detachable leaves or groups of leaves.

One object ofthe invention is to provide novel means yforfseourely retaining detachable leaves Within a binderin such a manner as to allow yfor readily inserting or removing leaves from the binder.

Another object of the invention is to provide flexible retainingy `means associated with the binder to which `theleads ymay be secured in a readily detachable manner.

A further object of the invention is to proy vide novel-means for securing a flexible retaining member iin' association with a binder.

Other objects of the invention include the provision of novel elements of the .structure together With the interrelationof parts and the combination offelements, the'whole forming a simple practical device, which will be cheap andl easy to manufacture and Which Will be simple toL manipulate.

One .featureof the invention relates to the provision of a flexible retainingstrip for association with a binder' which is formed of a material yespecially designed to withstand rough usage and yet Will remain flexible to facilitate the kmanipulation of the device.

Another feature of the invention relates to the provision of novel means for permanently securing a retaining strip to a binder cover which will beisimple in construction and effective in operation.

As bestillustrated in Fig. 3, the `retaining members l5 comprise strips, formed as ril.y lust'rated, to Uprovidebearing surfaces 46 between threaded retaining" members 47. Suitable eyelets 48 are provided within the sides 10 and 11 on the members 40 through which the retaining members 47 pass. The internal flange portions 49 of the eyelets are adapted to form Vguiding means for the tapesl. By adjusting the tension applied to the member 46 byv adjusting the threaded members 47, the tape 15 may. be held in its adjusted position between the surfaces 46 and the member 40.

1n using the above -described binder, tapes 15 are released fronione of the retaining members by loosening screws 47 sufliciently to, relieve thepressure thereon. The tapes are then pulled from engagement with retaining member 46 and may be threaded through the leaves or other material to be placed within the folder. After the leaves have been thus inserted, tapes 15 are again passed under retaining members 46 and are clamped by tightening screws 4 Gbviously the tapes maybe adjusted to any length desired depending uponthe size of the binder and the quantity of material placed therein. They may also be adjusted from both ends in order to centrally place they tapes if desired, or to provide any relative' positions between. the various parts which may be required. Screws 47 are preferably formed with a sufficiently wide slot to enable them to be operated by `commonly available articles, such as a coin. This avoids the necessity of maintaining a screw driver at hand in order to operate the'binder and permits the same to be readily adjusted.

By employing screw threaded members for bringing plates 46 into engagement with tapes 15 a sucient amount of pressure may be obtained tol positively clamp the tapes against the cover members without the use of specially treated or formed elements or roughened surfaces. y

While certain novel features of the invention have been shown and described and are pointed out in the annexed claims, it will be Vunderstood that various omissions, substi` tutions and changes in the forms and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the inven- V tion.

What is claimed is 1. In combination with a loose leaf binder, aflexible element associated therewith and adapted to retain the leaves therein, a pressure plate cooperating with said flexible element, and means for bringing said pressure plate kinto firm engagement therewith, comprisingva member carried by said binder and threaded into said pressure plate, said threaded element being provided with a wide slot to permit operation thereof by a coin.

2. A pressure plate for a loose leaf binder adapted to receive and secure a flexible tape, said plate comprising a central bearing'porassociated 'therewith and adapted to receive a Y' flexibletape, a retaining member secured to said connecting member, and means for securely clamping said tape between said retaining member and said connecting member, said retaining member comprising a dished central portion adapted to bear on said tape and screw threaded portions on opposite sides thereof adapted to receive clamping screws.

4. In a loose leaf binder, a pair of hinged cover members, a hinged connecting member associated therewith and adapted to receive a flexible tape, a retaining member secured to said connecting member, and means for securely clamping said tape between said retaining member and said connecting member, comprising threaded members carried by said connecting member and engaging said retaining member.

5. 1n a loose leaf binder, a flexible member for securing leaves therein, connecting members for connecting said flexible member to said binder, clamping means associated with each of said connecting members having threaded means in engagement therewith for adjustably securing said flexible member thereto, said clamping members comprising a pressure plate adapted to engage said flexible member, and screw means passing through said connecting members and threaded into said pressure members for adjustably securing the saine.
