IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,348, dated February 8, 1876; application filed December 14, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JEREMIAH G. SHER- MAN, of McHenry, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Farm -Gates, which is fully described in the followingspecification,

reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, in which-- Figure 1 is a plan view of the gate when closed, and 2 a similar view of the gate when open.

The object of my invention is to make the gate adjustable in height, and easily opened and closed by a person on horseback or in a carriage.

The invention consists in hanging the gate upon adjustable supports, and also in an arrangement of arms and levers for opening and closing it,-as will be hereinafter fully described.

In the drawings, A represents a gate of one panel, consisting of rails a a, fastened to upright posts a, and braced by the inclined rail b. The rear end of the gate is supported upon short rails B, extending from fence-post O to the post D, the extreme ends of the rails of the gate resting upon the short rails B. A hole is bored through each of the short rails B, and a pin, 0, is'attached to one of the rails.

To the upper end of the post D is loosely attached one end of a rod, E, which is attached at e to a wire loop, E, which passes around the upper rail of the gate underneath the brace 11, which is notched at its upper end, for the purpose of receiving and holding the lower end of the loop. To'the top rail of the gate is attached anarm, F, which extends upward and backward to the rear of the gate, and upon the top of this arm is fixed a Strip, G, the front end of which is provided with a slot, 9, through which the rod E passes. To the rear end of this strip is fastened a short arm, H, which projects outward and backward, as seen in Fig. 1. To the outer end of this short arm are pivoted two long rods or handles, I and K, which extend outward upon opposite sides of the gate, their outer ends being held loosely in staples d, sup

ported upon the posts L and M. Upon the post L is a catch, f, which engages with one of the rails of the gate, and holds the latter in position when opened. Upon the fencepost N is a catch, It, which engages with one of the rails, and holds the gate securely when closed.

The rear end of the arm F, if desired, may be enlarged to form a wind-board, 'i, which will. afford greatv assistance in opening and closing the gate in a high wind, as, on account of its being located in rear of the'pivot of the gate, it will act as an equalizer in either opening or closing the gate against the wind.

. To open the gate it is only necessary to push upon the rod I or pull upon the rod K. In either case the rod acts in the proper direction upon the outer end of the short arm H to turn the gate, and the forward end of the strip G, pressing upon the flexible connection E E, will at the same time raise the forward end of the gate, so that it will swing free from the catch h, and perrnit the gate to be opened.

In closing the gate the operation isthe same, except that the force applied to the rod I or K must be reversed.

If it is desired to raise the gate so that it,

attached to the auxiliary post D, and to the gate near its outer end, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
