DEVICE FOR HANGING ELECTRICAL mxwunss Filed Oct. 1?. 1927 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENYOR Mall W/z iln ATTOR EY Patented Oct. 29, 1929 PATENT OFFICE MATT WHITNEY, OF COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO DEVICE FOR HANGING ELECTRICAL FIXTURES Application filed October 17, 1927. Serial No. 226,738.
My invention relates to devices for hanging electrical fixtures.
My object is to provide a device of this character which will enable the workman to -hang various kinds of fixtures on any standard outlet without being compelled to use the large assortment of fittings now employed in such work.
Although I show the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not thereby limit myself to the precise form shown, but wish it understood that within the scope of what hereinafter is claimed, various changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of the strap previous to forming; Figure 2, a side elevation of the strap after forming; Figure 3, an end elevation of Figure 2; Figure 4, a
plan and an end elevation of the stud fitting; Figure 5, a plan and a side elevation of the slide bar; Figure 6, a plan view of the strap and slide bar; Figure 7 a sectional elevation of the strap, slide bar and bracket support in the vertical position; Figures, a front elevation of the bracket support; Figure 9, a side elevation of the device mounted in an outlet box, the box being shown in section; Fig ure 10, an end elevation of the device; Figure 11, a plan View of Figure 10; Figure 12, a plan and a side elevation of one extension bar Figure 13, a plan, an end elevation and a side elevation of the other extension bar; Figure 14 a plan view, looking from the underside,
of the strap with the extension bars mounted thereon and disposed at their maximum adjustment; Figure 15, aside elevation of Figure 14, and=Figure 16 an end elevation of Figure 15. Similar reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
The device comprises a strap '1; a slide bar 2; a stud fixture 3; connecting bolts 5; two extension bars 6 and 7; and a bracket support 8.
The strap 1 is provided with longitudinal slots 9, 10, a main hole 11, secondary holes 12,
13, 14 and end holes 15-.-
The slide bar 2 is provided with main holes 1617, threaded secondary holes 18, and threaded end holes 19-20.
The stud fixture 3 is provided with aplurality of Screws 24 and 25 extend through slots 9 J and 10 respectively, and are screwed into the end holes 19 and 20 respectively, in slide bar 2.
The bracket support 8 is secured to the slide bar 2 by screws 27 screwed into holes 18 in the slide bar 2, as shown in Figure 7.
The extension bars 6 and 7 are provided with longitudinal slots 28 and 29, end holes 30, and flanges 31. The extension bars are secured to strap 1 by screws 3233 extending through slots 28 and 29, respectively, screws 32 being screwed into holes 15 and screws'33, into the holes 13 and 14 which are near the edges of the strap 1.
When the device is assembled, the stud fixture 3 is screwed on the stud S as shown in Figure 9.
Toaccommodate my device to the depth of the outlet box, I use bolts 5 of the proper length to draw the strap 1 snugly against the box B or the plaster ring R, as the case may be. By this means I secure a wide range of adjustment by'simply keeping on hand a vari ous assortment of bolts. I can, therefore, adjust'my device to the depth of any'outlet box now on the market.
My device affords facilities whereby three different sized supporting nipples can :be used. If the smallest of the three sizes is used, the slide bar 2 is moved along until the hole 17 is concentric with the hole 11 of the strap 1. A supporting nipple is screwed into the hole 17 and the fixture screwed on'the supporting nipple. If the next larger sized supporting nipple is used, the slide bar 2 is moved along until the hole 16 is concentric with the hole 11 of the strap 1. If the largest sized supporting nipple is used, it may be screwed into the hole 11 of the strap '1. If the slide bar 2 is removed, the end of the supporting nipple may be screwed beyond the inner surface of the strap 1. The extension bars 6 and 7 are used when hanging a fixture which requires a strap longer than the strap 1. These extension bars are moved on the strap 1 until the holes 30 are at the required distance, and the fixture secured to said extension bars in the regular manner.
The bracket support is used when hanging a fixture which requires such a support.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, a strap member comprising a sheet of metal having a flat main portion, and two side portions bent at rightangles to said main portion to form a channel, each side portion having a flange bent inwardly of said channel, said main portion being provided with a threaded central main hole and two longitudinal slots; a slide bar, provided with threaded main holes of different diameters, mounted on the flat main portion of said strap member; and
screws extending through the longitudinal slots in said strap member and into said slide bar.v
