Description

May 17, 1960 M. BoDlAN ADJUSTABLE FIXTUREHANGER Filed June 1'7, 1957 n m m T ADJUSTABLE FIXTURE HANGER Marcus Bodiau, Los Angeles, Calif., assignor to Sunbeam Lighting Company, Los AngelesCalif., a rm Y This invention relates to an adjustable hanger for the attachment of iixtures such as light fixtures to ceilings. `One object of the invention is to provide an adjustable hanger which may be positioned on a channel member Y of a structural support for a ceiling, and which may also be easily adjusted vertically to correspond to any desired elevation relative to the ceiling. Another object is to provide a fixture hanger which may be attached to a channel structural member after the structural member is in place and attached to other members. A further object is to provide a fixture hanger which may be attached to ceiling supportmembers with a minimum amount of labor.
These and other objects are attained by my invention which will be understood from the following'description, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational -view showing xtures as attached to parallel channel structural members of the ceiling support;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the lixture hanger; Fig. 3 is an elevational view partly in section taken in the direction of lines 3--3 of Fig. 2; and v Fig. 4 is a top elevational view partly in section showing the hanger from the position 4--4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, the invention in its preferredform consists of a hanging bar 11 which consists of a formed sheet metal channel12 havingl a back web fl Patent O of the teeth 14 permitsthe easier positioning of the bar In the preferred structure the opening between the ends of the anges 26 of the locking strap is large enough,
Vand lthe length of the sides 22 is great enough, so that the looking strap may be placed over the structural chan- `nel member 27 without the necessity of spreading apart the sides 22, as shown in Fig. 3, although this latter expedient of spreading the sides may be used where the flanges are too long to permit the simple slidingof the locking strap over the channel, as shown.
Upon releasing the clamping screw 3) and permitting the hanging bar to slide freely in the slots 21, the ele- 13 and having teeth 14 disposed in parallel relation on the two opposite anges 15 of the channel, these teeth 14 being formed by notches 16 cut or otherwise formed in the iianges, the upper outer corner of each tooth `l4` being tapered to facilitate the upward adjusting movement of the hanging bar, as will be described below. The hanging bar 11 at its lower end has means for the attachment of a lighting fixture, for example as shown, the threaded nipple 18.
The hanging bar 11 is arranged to be' vertically movable in rectangular aligned slots 21 in the opposite sides 22 of a U-shaped locking strap 23 which consists of a U-shaped formed metal stamping [whose legs or sides 22 are spaced a distance. apart corresponding to the height of a hoiizontal structural channel member 25 of vation of the attaching means, for example, the threaded nipple 18 as shown, can be adjusted to suit the requirements of the particular job', both as to the thickness of the ceiling itself or the positioning of the attached iixture below the ceiling. The attaching means is not limited to a threaded nipple, but may be a stud or bolt, and the hanger may be employed equally well for holding temporary partitions, pipes or for similar purposes.
The advantages of my invention will be readily understood. The hanger maybe adjusted laterally to any position on the structural channel members prior to the installation of the ceiling surface and is then readily adjustable up and down to it the particular job by simply releasing the clamping screw 30 and tightening it again against the hanging bar to position the notches of said bar at any desired elevation.-
I claim:
, 1. An adjustable fixture' hanger adapted for attachment .v
to an edge-positioned channel structural member of a ceiling support comprising a notched hanging bar having a plurality of rectangular notches spaced to engage a horizontal flange of said structural channel member; a U- shaped locking strap having inwardly turned flanges on holding said bar at a selected notch against a flange-l edge of said channel member, lsaid hanging bar having:
'means' at its lower end for attaching a xture thereto.
2. An adjustable xture hanger adapted for attach-- ment to an edge-positioned channel structural member of4 the ceiling structure. The sides 22 of the locking strap Y 2:3 are provided with anges 26 turned inwardly toward each other, these being arranged to engage the web 27 of said structural channel member 25. The connecting member 28 of the U-shaped locking strapv23 is provided with a clamping screw means 30 mounted in a threaded hole 31 midway between the connected sides 22. The rectangular slots 21 in the sides 22 of the U-shaped locking strap 23 are disposed toward the clamping screw means 30, and said slots are of such widthv that fthe notched hanging bar 11 may be moved freely therein when the flanges 26 are engaged around the structural channel member 25. The notched hanging bar 11V is positioned relative to the llanges 32 of the structural channel member by selected pairs of teeth 14 of the hanging bar which rest upon said flanges, the corresponding notches 16 of the hanging bar 11 being pressed into this position vby the clamping screw '30. In moving the v a ceiling support comprising a notched hanging channelbar having a plurality of rectangular notches in both iianges spaced apart to form teeth to engage the hori zontal iianges of said structural channel member; a U shaped locking strap having inwardly turned iianges on: the legs thereof, said flanges being adapted for'slidablyengaging .the vertically disposed web face of said struc tural channel member, the legs of said strap being pro vided with valigned openings, said notched hanging chan-- nel bar being slidably mounted in said openings, and said openings being large enough to permit said hanging bar' yto freely slide therethrough; and a positioning screw means threaded into a threaded hole in the closed end of` said U-shaped locking strap, said screw means being adapted for removably positioning said bar on the ange edges of said fchannel member, in a selected pair ofr notches in said. bar, said hanging bar having means atY i its lower end for attaching a iixture'thereto.
