Description
E. H. RAINES FLUE STOF Filed March 14:l 1929 dbtotmq Vlll Patented Oct. 22, i952@ ururn s'i EDWIN I-I. RAINES, OF URBANNA, VIERiE-ENA, EStG-NOR OF ONE-HALF TO ELWIN S. MUIRE, 0F URBANN.`L, VIRGINIA FLUE STOP Application :filed March 14, 1929. Serial No. 347,051.
The invention relates to an improved means for closing flue openings and has 'tor its principal object the provision of a means for holding a cover plate on flue openings that will etectually hold the plate in position against outward pressure from. the chimney and thus providing an absolutely ire-proot cover for the iiue opening.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a flue stop comprising a cover plate for the flue opening, and having mounted thereon a fixed pin and a spring actuated pin to engage the wall of the iue opening on opposite sides thereof, the spring actuating the pin being of suiiicient tension to hold the plate in covering position against any air pressure in the chimney.
A further object ot the invention is the provision of a cover plate for Hue openings having an inwardly extended bracket secured thereto and having a pin adjustably secured on said bracket and another pin slidably mounted on the bracket, and spring actuated, said pins extending in opposite directions from the bracket and adapted to engage the wall of the flue on opposite sides of the opening to securely hold the cover plate in position.
The invention will be described in detail hereinafter and will be found illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a transverse sectional view of a iue opening showing the cover plate in position thereon and in section,
Figure 2 is a sectional view on a plane in dicated by the line 2 2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 6 an end view in elevation of the securing means detached from the cover plate.
In the drawings similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The cover plate 1 may be circular or any other shape desired and is preferably formed ot sheet metal and adapted to close the opening to a flue or chimney designated A. Se
cured to the inner side of the plate 1 is a U-shaped bracket 2, said bracket being adapted to be secured in any suitable manner, including flanges 8 extending outwardly of the arms 4 of the bracket securedkby means of bolts or other fastening members 5. `6 desig natos a pin having one end threaded as shown at 7 and adj ustably secured inthe rarms 4 by means of nuts 8 arranged on opposite sides ot one oi' said farms a, the other and outer end of said pin 6 being tapered tro a point as shown at 9 to engage the wall of the iue A as shown in Figures 1 ard 2. l0 indicates another pin that is slidably mounted in `the arms L and having ahead 1l at oneend thereot that provides a stop to limit the movement ot' the pin by engaging the bracket 2, while its other end is tapered to a point :as shown at 12 and provided withaa threaded portion 13 to receive a nut 14 and a washer 15 forming an abutment to receive the thrust of an eX- pansible coil spring 16 enclosing said pin 10 and terminally engaging the adjacent arm 4: of the bracket 2. The nut 14 also provides means by which the tension of the spring 16 may be regulated as desired for the most eii'eotual operation of the device, while the pin 6 may be adjusted by means of the nuts 8 to provide for mounting the securing means in flue openings of different dimensions.
In operation it will be apparent that the device is mounted in the flue by inserting the pin 1() in advance of the pin 6 and by pressing the end of the pin 10 against the wall of the Hue opening to compress the spring 16, the pin 6 may be then inserted into the opening and pressure on the spring 16 being released the pointed ends 9 and 12 ot the pins 6 and 10, respectively, will engage the wall of the lue opening on opposite sides thereotl and eiiectually hold the cover plate 1 in position.
Vhat is claimed is 1. A iue stop, comprising a plate adapted to cover a flue opening, a pin secured thereto and adapted to engage the wall of the opening, a pin slidably mounted on the plate and adapted to engage the wall ot the opening, and spring means projecting the last mentioned pin and holding the pins in engagement with said wall.
2. A flue stop, comprising a plate adapted to cover a flue opening, a bracket secured to said plate, a pin secured to the bracket, an-
other pin slidably mounted on said bracket,
and a spring to project said pin, said pins being adapted to engage the Wall of the flue and hold the plate in position. Y
3. A Hue stop, comprising a plate adapted to cover a flue opening, a bracket secured to said plate, a pin adjustably secured to the bracket, another pin slidably mounted on the bracket, an eXpansible coil spring enclosing y the Apin and engaging the bracket, and an adj ustable abutment on the pin, said spring normally projecting the pin, the pins being adapted to engage the Wall of the flue and hold Ythe plate in position.
4f. A flue stop, comprising a plate adapted to cover a flue opening, a U-shaped bracket secured to said plate, a pin secured to said bracket, means to adjust the pin on the bracket, another pin slidably mounted on the v bracket, a head on one end of the pin limiting the movement of the pin in one direction, an abutment adjustably secured to the pin, and an expansible coil spring enclosing the pinand terminally engaging the bracket and abutment to project the pin, said pins being adapted to engage a Wall on opposite sides ofthe iiue opening to hold the plate in posi tion.
In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature. EDWIN H. RAINES.
