To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMns O. BEWAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Onley, in the county of Accomac and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Friction Igniting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to friction igniting devices designed especially for use in connection with acetylene gas burners.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the device attached to a burner.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
The working parts of the device are carried by and almost entirely inc-losed in a' casing comprising a cover 1 and an inner member 2 fitting in the cover 1, the oasing being box-like in construction and provided with suitable end openings to permit necessary projection of the working parts.
A rod 3 extends through the casing projecting slightly at each end. Inner and outer nuts, 4.- and 5, hold said rod in place. These nuts are arranged at the upper end of the casing and to the outer nut 5 is soldered or otherwise secured a sleeve or tube 6, containing one member of the spark producing means. This may be of any suitable compound or composition adapted when brought into frictional engagement with a rough surface to form sparks.
A spring 7 is carried by the cover 1 and has an angled end portion which works in the sleeve and bears on the outer end of the compound or composition 7.
Within the casing formed by the members 1 and 2 is a slidable frame 8 movable along the rod 3. This frame is most clearly shown in Fig. 1 and carries at its upper end an angled plate 9, the upwardly extending portion of which forms a file adapted to be engaged by the inner end of the compound 7 which is molded in the form of a cylinder and works freely in the sleeve 6.
Adjacent its lower open end the frame 8 has a cross bracing member 10, and the free ends of the frame are bent to form flaring guide wings 11. Bolts 12 are passed through the casing and serve to connect the cover 1 and inner member 2. To provide for the ready placing of the bolts in the casing after the, inner parts are assembled I provide the bolts (with sleeves 13 which extend through the inner casing 2only. A collar 14 1S fixed on the rod 3 and bears on these sleeves. A rubber Washer 1a. is fitted over the inner nut 4 and forms a buffer forthe frame 8. A coil spring 15 is placed within the frameS and about the rod3, hearing at its lower end on the collar 14: and at its upper end on the frame. v
The casing is also secured by bolts 16 provlded with rotatable sleeves 17, which do not extend into the cover portion of the casing. A U-shaped pull member 18 works freely between the sleeves 17 and at its lower end has attached to it a pull rod 18. The upper open end of the pull member is bent to form an open, spring ring or loop 19, and the free end portions are angled outwardly as at 20, and are adapted to engage and lock with the lower end of the open frame 8.
Burner clamping bands 21 are connected by a metal strip 24. The inner casing 2 is suitably slotted on its bottom member and the upper end of the strip 24: is inserted and then bent in one of these openings as shown at 25. The lower end is bent to form an arm 26, which arm is inserted and bent in the other slot or opening in the member 1, as in Fig. 2.
The formation of this arm throws the clamping band 22 at the lower end of the strip farther from the casing than the upper band, so that when the device is applied to the burner A, as in Fig. 1 the casing will be at an angle, thus bringing the projecting file plate closer to the burner openings. In operation when the pull member 18 1S drawn downwardly the frame 8 is pulled downwardly by the angled ends 20, against the tension of the spring 15.
This places the spring 21 under compression, but as the curved loop portion 19 passes between the rollers or sleeves 17 the upper portion of the pull member will be compressed thereby disengaging the angled ends 21 from the frame. This when re leased will be forced upwardly by the spring 15 and the file 9 being in engagement with the igniting compound 6 a series of sparks will be produced, thus igniting the gas.
When the pull rod 18 is released the spring 21 will return the pull member 18 to normal position, the wings 11 guiding the angled ends 20 in re'e'ngagement with the frame 8. It is thought that the operation and construction of the device will be clear from this description.
What I claim is 1. In a friction igniting device,acasing a slidable spring pressed frame therein, open at its lower end, spark producing means carried in part by the casing and the frame, a pull member having spring portions adapted to interlock with the lower end of the frame, guide wings carried by said lower end, sleeves between which the pull members work, and within which they are compressed at a predetern'iined point of their downward movement, thereby disen gaging the pull member from the frame, a spring for returning the pull member to normal position, and means for guiding said return movement.
In a device of the kind described, a
casing, a spring pressed slidable frame therein, a file'carried by the upper end of the frame and adapted to project from said casing, a spring pressed spark producing member supported at the upper end of the casing and in engagement with the file, a pull member formed of spring members adapted to engage and interlock with the lower open end of the frame, guide wings carried by the lower end of the frame, sleeves between which said pull member works, said sleeves compressing the members of the pull member when the latter reaches a predetermined point of downward movement, thereby disengaging the pull member from the frame, and a spring for returning the pull member to normal position, the frame wings guiding said return movement.
