Be it known that I, VVILLIAM-J. FRIsnIE, a citizen of the United States, a nd a resident of Chicago, in the county'ofCook and 5 State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark-Producing Mechanism, of which the following is a specification. a
My invention relates to spark producing mechanism which is. particularly useful as an attachment on the reflectors of'miners spring which when released Will rapidly rotate the wheel in association with'pyrophoric material to produce a stream, of sparks 20 which are directed to the gas outlet .of the .lamp with which the attachment is asso-Y ciated. I therefore make the lever structure of substantially U-shaped' cross sections, the walls 28 and 29 with the base 80 then forming a channel P between the gas tip and the friction wheel when the lever is swung inwardly as shown in Fig. 2. The end of the lever is widened out to form a cap 31 which will engage over the end of the gas tip when the lever is swung in, such application of the cap more or less restricting the outflow of the gas so that it will acquire some pressure particularly when the pressure in the carbide cup is below normal. The issuing gas will enter the channel formed by the lever and will travel towards the friction wheel and will be fully protected against draught. Then when the lever is released and is suddenly thrown back by its spring the produced sparks will ignite the gas stream and the flame will be communicated to the tip. Ignition of the lamp is thus assured even though the sparking on said frame and adapted to be swung to may be weak, or the gas pressure low. The wall 29 of the lever is wider than the wall 28 so that the slot 32 may be provided for accommodating the end 24 of the lever actuating spring, this end being looped around the edge of the wall 29 as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

and 3, and the smooth rounded back of the ward and away from said outlet, said lever having a channel for receiving gas from said outlet and conducting it towards said wheel, means resisting swing of'said lever towards said outlet and tending to return it when released,- and means connecting said wheel with said lever whereby said wheel is rotated during returnof the lever to cooperate with the pyrophoric material to produce The important frame concentric'with said wheel to be swung toward and away from said outlet, said lever presenting a guldeway for the flow ofgas from said outlet towards said wheel when said lever is swung to said outlet, means for resisting swing of said lever towards said outlet and for returning it when released, and means for causing rotation ofsaid wheel during return movement of said lever whereby sparks will be generated to ignite the gas guided toward s said wheel by said lever.
3. The combination of a gas outlet and spark producing mechanism, said mechanism comprising a frame supported adjacent to said outlet, a spark wheel pivoted on said frame to rotate in a plane including: said outlet, a lever pivoted adjacent to said wheel and adapted to be swung toward and away towards said wheel when said lever is swung.

pyrophoric material, and means for causing said wheel and pyrophoric material to cooperate when said lever is swung back by the spring whereby sparks are produced to ignite the gas.
5. The combination with a gas tiphaving a gas passageway therethrough, of spark producing mechanism, said mechanism comprising a frame supported adjacent to the tip outlet, a friction wheel pivoted on said frame to rotate in a plane including said outlet, a lever pivoted on said frame adjacent said wheel to swing in a plane parallel to that of the wheel, a spring tending to hold said lever away from said tip, the end of said lever forming a cap for engaging in front of the tip outlet when the lever is swung towards the tip whereby the outflow of gas is restricted, and pyrophoric material cooperating with said wheel during return movement of said lever to produce sparks for igniting the released and issuing gas.
6. In a gas lamp, the combination of a burner tip, a reflector surrounding said tip, spark producing mechanism comprising a frame mounted on said reflector, a friction wheel pivoted on said frame to rotate in the plane of the gas passageway through said tip, a lever pivoted on said frame to swing parallel with said wheel, a spring tending to swing and hold said lever outwardly away from the tip, said lever when swung inwardly bridging the space between said wheel and the tip and affording a passage way for receiving and conducting gas toward the wheel, means for rotating said wheel when the lever is returned by its spring, and pyrophoric material cooperating with the wheel to produce sparks for igniting the conducted gas.
7. In a gas lamp, the combination of a reflector, a burner tip arranged in the axis of the said reflector, spark producing mechanism comprising a frame secured on the reflector a distance away from the burner tip,

In a gas lamp, the combination of a reflector, a burner tip positioned in the axis of said reflector, spark producing mechanism comprising a frame secured on said reflector a distance outwardly from said tip, a friction wheel pivoted on said frame, a lever pivoted on said frame to swing in a diametral plane toward and away from said tip, a spring tending to resist inwardswing of said lever and to return it to an outer position after such inward swing, the end of said lever being shaped to form a cap to be positioned in front of the tip when said lever 1s swung inwardly whereby the flowof gas will be deflected, walls on said lever forming a passageway between the tip and wheel for conducting gas toward the wheel, means for rotating said wheel during return movement of said lever, and pyrophoric material for cooperating with the Wheel to produce sparks for igniting the conducted gas.
