Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIo HARRY F. HENDERSON, OF BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR'TO HIMSELF AND GEORGE LEWIS, OF SAME PLACE.
. IMPROVEMENT IN PENDULUM-BALLS. I
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,285, dated February 8, 1876; application filed January. 24, me.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY F. HENDERSON, of Bristol, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful-Improvements in Pendulum-Balls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in pendulum-balls.
Figure l is a side elevation of myinvention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
A A are semi-spheroidal sections, formed of sheet metal, either by upsetting or spinning, as may be found most expedient in their manufacture. The adjoining edges of sections AA are retained and also concealed by a metallic ring, B, the same being provided with flanges b b to retain the sections in position, and said flanges also serve to conceal the meeting-edges of the said sections. 0 is atube, screw-threaded at c, and provided at its lower end with a eollet or washer, 0. Tips D-D are placed on the tube C, one above and the other below the sections A A. These tips are formed with their ends countersunk or recessed for partially receiving and concealing the washer secure the several parts of the ball on the tube.
The pendulum-rod passes through the tube, and the speed of the clock may be regulated by varying the adjustment of the pendulumball on its rod.
The ball may be weighted, if desired, either by pouring lead into the lower section A, and afterward polishing the outer surface of same, or the weight may be cast in a mold, and slipped over the hollow tube.
The several parts of the ball may be made of any desired material, and, if desired, the tips D D may be dispensed with, and a conical washer and nut substituted therefor.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The sections A A, in combination with the ring B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The sections A A, ring B, and tips D D, in combination with the tube C, washer c, and nut E, substantially as shown and described. In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of January, 1876.
HARRY F. HENDERSON.
Witnesses S. P. NEWELL, GEORGE LEwIs.
