PATENT ori-ICE ELEGIIRICy STAMPING DEVICE Appiication mea May 24,
This invention appertains to printing or stamping by the application of heat to the type or printing members, the device being particularly adapted for printing in gold leaf and the like on leather and similar goods.
The primary objectof the present invention is the provision of a novel printing device embodying a hollow body having an electric heating element therein and novelv means for holding the type or printing members in intimate contact with the lower face of the hollow body and novel means for facilitating the manipulation ofthe body.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a yprinting device embodying the hollow body containing the electric heating element and type bars extending longitudinally of the hollow body for receiving the type or other printing members and novel means for holding the type bars firmly in place so as to preclude the movement of the type or printing members.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an electrically heated device embodying a means for holding the type or printing members removably in place in intimate Contact with the hollow body and a manipulating handle connected with the body y forming a conduit for the entrance of current conducting wires into the body for connection with the heating element.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an electrically heated printing device of the above character, which will be durable cost.
and efficient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed'upon the market at a reasonable With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings:
Figure 1 is aside elevation of the improved electric printing device, showing one of the clamping straps broken away and in section,
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the device,
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the same,
Figure 4 is 'a detail transverse section 1926. Serial No. 111,365.
through one corner of the device illustrating the formation of the type retaining bars and the means for holding the type retaining bars,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view 'illustrating the type retaining bars and the clamping means therefor,
Figure 6 is a side elevation of a slightly modiiied form for holding the type or printing members in place,
Figure 7 is a bottom plan view of the form shown in Figure 6,
Figure 8 is an end elevation of the same,
Figure 9 isa detail section through one of the type holding bars with the type in position taken .on the line 9 9 -of Figure 7,
Figure 10 is a detail perspective view of one of the type holding or carrying bars, and
Figure 1l is a detail perspective view of one piece of type.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates one form of the improved electric heated printing device which comprises a hollow body 15 preferably formed from metal. rThe body as shown is of a substantially rectangular configuration and includes the bottom wall 16, the side walls 17 ,n the end walls 18 and the top wall 19. Arranged within the hol`` low body 15 is any preferred type of electric heating element 20 and as this heating element can be of any preferred character suitable for the purpose and well known in the art, the same will not be described in detail. The top or one side wall of the body 15 can be made removable to allow theplacing .of the heating element 20 in position and this wall can then be riveted or otherwise secured in place. The top wall 19 at the meeting points of the transverse and longitudinal centers of the body is provided with a manipulating handle or* hand grip 21 which can be removably or permanently secured in place. This handle 21 is provided with a longitudinally extending bore for forming a conduit for the current conducting wires 22 which are connected in the ordinary manner to the terminals of the electric heat-ing element 20.
In the form A of my invention I provide a plurality of pairs of type holding bars which, as shown, extend longitudinally of the bottom wall 16 of the body. The inner faces of these pairs of the type holding bars 23 are beveled as at 24 so as to receive the wedge shaped body portion 25 of the type 26 therebetween. The type can bear any desired letters, characters or insignia that may be desired to impress upon the'leatner goods or other articles being stamped. It is to be understood that the type is :tre-ely removable from the bars 23.
In order to hold the type bars 23 in correct position longitudinally of the bottom wall 16 of the body 15 and the type 26 in intimate contact with the body, novel cla-mping means 30 and 31 are provided. rIhe clamping means 30 and 31 are located adjacent to the opposite ends of the body and each includes the transversely extending locking bars 32 which are of a substantially wedge shape in cross section for fitting in V-shaped notches 33 in the lower faces or' the type bars 23 adjacent to the opposite ends thereof. lIhe outer ends of these transverse ly extending bars 32 are provided with up'- standing armsV 34 and 35 which are adapted to engage the opposite side walls 18 of the body 15. The upper end of the arm terminates in a screw threadedshank 36, while the upper end of the arm 34 is provided with a clamping arm 37 for engaging the top wall of the body. The outer end of the clamping arm 37 is provided with a suitable opening for receiving` the threaded shank36 and a Wing nut 33 can be threaded on the shank 36 and the arm 35 will be raisedl moving the clamping arm 32 in firm Contact with the type bars 23, thus forcing the broad bases of the type 25 in abutting relation to the bottom wall 16. Y
"When it is desired to remove the type bars it is merely necessary to loosen the nut 3` so that the bars 23 can be moved transversely relative to one another so that the type can be slid 4from out of engagement with the bars. The new type can then be inserted between the pairs of type bars and the bars of each pair moved into contact again with the type after which the nuts can be again adjusted.
I/Vhen it is desired to use the type, the current is turned on by any preferred type of switch and when the type becomes suitably heated, the gold leaf or other transparent paper is placed on the article which is to be stamped after which the stamping device is placed thereon and pressure applied thereto. rIhe heat facilitates the application and the adherence of the gold or other transfer to the article being stamped and gives the same a desirable and pleasing appearance. Y
In Figures 6 to 10 inclusive I have shown a slightly modified form of means for holding the type in position and in this form the body 15 adjacent to one end wall 18 is provided with depending ears 40 which receives a pivot pin or rod 41 which extends transversely of the bottom wall 16 of the body. Any desired number of type receiving bars 42 can be provided and oneV end of eachi` bar is lprovided with a hinge barrel 43 for swinging movement on the hinge pin 41. Each of the type receiving bars 42 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 44 for the reception of the type which is shown in detail in Figure11 of the drawings. The type is indicated by the reference character 45 and as shown, the opposite sides thereof are provided with guideways46 for the reception of guide legs- 47 defined by the slots 44 in the bar 42. The type when viewed in end/elevation is of a lsubstantially I-shape'. In order to hold the bars 42 in correct position and the type in intimate contact with the body 1-5 the opposite end of the body from the ears 41 is provided with a swinging yoke 48. rI-his yoke 48 is in the nature of a closed loop and includes a bottom clamping bar 49, a parallel top bar 50 and connecting side bars 51. Theside bars 51 are provided with vertical slots 52 for the reception of pivot pins 53 carried by the side wallsl? of the body. 'Ihe top bar 50 is pro.- vided with threaded thumb screws 54 for im'- pinging against the top wall of the body and it is obvious that by tightening` up on `the screws 54 that the bottom clamping bar 49 will swing the type bars 42 toward the4 bot-y tom wall 16 of the bodyl and thusy urge `and hold the type 45 in contact with the lower( bodying the novel means for holding the type in firm contact with the heated body. Changes in details maybe made Without departing from the spirit or scope of this in vention, but what I claim as new is ,y
