LID CLAMP FOR CONTAINERS Filed July 24, 1947 IN VEN TOR. ALBERT B BER ATTozNBy YPatented Feb. 20, 1951 UNITED STATES PATEN T OF F IC E 4IJID CLAMPFOR CONTAINERS v:Albert Bober, New York,N. Y.
Application July-24., 1947, 'Serial No. '763,359
YThis invention yrelates to .an improved holder for cans, pails .and containers.
VThe invention relates more particularly .to holders vfor paint cans, .and involves va construc-v tion -wherein companion jaws @engage y.and hold the Vopposite sidespf the rim .of :the can .or container -and hanefbars -slidably:adjustablelon each other by means of :loops ,provided w-ith'lhand holds for moving the :loops aparto-r :toward :each other, and are held in ,adjusted -eposition :by means of a clamp which secures ythe barsagainstaccidental sliding, the clamp being equipped with a handle forilifting zahdiealrying the can or container.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a holder for .paint .cansand .other containers with hooked .end jaws ,and `.bars slidalole ron A.each other by means of terminal loopsso arranged .that a non-binding Yadjustment of thebars can always be made, and-to-provide -a\`-l1andle -with means for clamping the bars by lmerely turning :the hndle..
Another robiet of ,the invention is the provision ofa holderof this type with .sliding bars having outer can grippingterminal bars, :with coupling loops for holding the bars insliding relationto each othenand a handle-.Qn .eeehzouplinsgleon which aids in the rapid and easy adjustment of the bars.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a holder for paint cans and other containers having sliding bars provided with terminal jaws and a handle having a loop which encloses both bars and is itself constructed to clamp the two bars against relative sliding movement by a screw action through the loop.
A further object ofthe invention is to improve the terminal jaw construction of each holdingr bar, so that the bars will not be displaced at dead center position on the can.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view, showing the improved holder attached to a paint can.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view, showing the terminal jaws moved inwardly to the limit of their travel toward each other.
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical cross sectional view, taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 4 isla partial longitudinal kvertical vcross sectional view, taken on lined-4 .of Fig. 2, .looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. '5 is a v.perspective v'view .of .a imodi'ed form of the invention, showing a :bail on the handle.
Fig. 6 is a detail *.bottom plan view, enlarged, of one of theterminal jaws of the :holdershown in-Fig.5.
vThe 'holder of `the present invention, is :to be used with a conventional paintfcan or eotherfoontainer :IU :having an outwardly directed .rim ,Or flange r-I oniits vkupper end'.l
The holder, according to ithe-formv. of `,the-invention shown-in Figs. 1 ,to 4, :includes flat metal bars I2 :and If'of similar construction. The bar l2 :is formed with .an .Outer terIJIliIIe-l :hook I4 and is-.eeuippedpn rits inner endwith abend loop |25, which `encloses A`the body *of the 'par I9. 'The inner loop I-5 is @formed with :a struck up flange "6 01.1 which-ihehandle fl 1 is .mounted by means of the cross pins ITI?, the handle -I-'I nbeing `of channel constructionto receive the -flange `M5.
Ifhe bar I3is formed -w-ith `-an vouter terminal hook, I8 and at its inner .end is provided .with a band :loop I9 which"slidablygreceives the body of the bar 1.12.7 This loopis alsofformed-with a struck im .ilse-ee .20.. -awhrill is received` by the channel handle 2|, and this handle is secured in place by means of the cross pins 22, which extend through the handle and ange.
Between the coupling loops I5 and I9 a handle loop 23 is disposed, which slidably receives the bars I2 and I3, and limits the inward movement of the loops I5 and I9 toward each other. The loop I 5 is positively secured to its bar l2 by brazing or other means, and the loop I9 is positively secured to the bar I3 by brazing or other means. But the loop 23 is slidably mounted on the bars I2 and I3, so that it will not interfere with the sliding of the bars I2 and I3 relative to each other.
The handle loop 23 is provided with an upstanding internally threaded boss or nut 24, which receives an externally threaded screw shank 25 of a T-shaped post 2B, which is equipped with a channel-shapedhandle 21, secured thereto by the cross pins 28.
The inner end of the screw shank 25 is adapted to have pressure engagement with the uppermost holder bar I2, and when the handle Z'I is man-J ually turned, the pressure of the shank 25 against the bar I2 will force this bar against the lowermost bar I3, thereby effectively clamping the two bars against accidental sliding movement.
When it is desired to adjust the spacing between the terminal hooks I4 and I8, the screw shank 25 is loosened by turning the handle 21 upwardly, and then the handles l1 and 2| are grasped and the bars l2 and I8 are shifted relative to each other to bring the terminal hooks into engagement with the can or container to be handled. The handle 2l is then turned downward and the two bars l2 and I3 will be effectively clamped against each other and the hooks i4 and i8 held in gripping position against the opposite sides of the rim ll of the container l0.
In Figs. and 6, there is shown a modied form of the invention, wherein the handle 2la is provided with a G-shaped carrying bail 30 having its confronting terminals 3l and 32 pivotally mounted in the handle 21a. Each of the bars I2a l and lila is provided with a bifurcated terminal hook jaw 38, which permits the positioning of the terminal jaws across the can or container, so that the hooks 33a and 33h of the terminal jaws may be placed on opposite sides of the dead center line of the container and accidental slippage thus avoided.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modiiications corning within the scope of the invention as dened in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, claim as new, and desire to secure by States Letters Patent is:
1. In a holder for paint cans and the like having a pair of bars with their inner ends overlapped and their outer ends formed with jaws for gripping the top rim of a can, means for adjustably securing together the adjacent inner ends of the bars to be adjustable to iit cans of different diameters, comprising a loop slidably engaged about the overlapped inner ends of the bars, an internally threaded boss formed on the portion oi said loop which extends across the top face of the topmost inner end of the overlapped inner ends, and a T-shaped post having a cylindrical shank and a cross, head, said cylindrical shank being threaded and engaged through said threadwhat I United ed boss to betightened against the said topmost inner end to clamp the inner ends against the portion of said loop opposite the portion thereof formed with said internally threaded boss,l and an inverted channel-shaped handle secured in position on the cross head of said T-shaped post.
2. In a holder for paint cans and the like having a pair of bars with their inner ends overlapped and their outer ends formed with jaws for gripping the top rim of a can, means for Iadjustably securing together the adjacent inner ends of the bars to be adjustable to t cans of different diameters, comprising a loop slidably engaged aboutjthe overlapped inner ends of the bars, an internally threaded boss formed on the portion of said loop which extends across the top face of the topmost inner end of the overlapped inner ends, and a T-shaped post having a cylindrical shank and a cross head, said cylindrical shank being threaded and engaged through said thread- ALBERT BOBER.
