PAPER CONTAINER HOLDER Filed Feb. 28, 1950 Eula 0. Baker INVENTOR.
BY MM 5% Patented Apr. 14, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PAPER CONTAINER HOLDER Eula OQBaker; Pontiac, Mich.
' Application February 28, 1950, Serial No. 146,733 (01. 294-31) Claims.
This invention relates to holders for milk botties and the like, and more particularly to a holder for a paper container.
An object of this invention is to provide a holder for a paper container that may be safely and securely attached to the container so that the container may be more easily handled.
Treated paper containers for milk and the like of half gallon size have become readily available and are used extensively. These containers'when full are quite heavy and are quite unwieldy and difficult to handle.
It is therefore another object of this invention to provide a handle for a paper container which may be so placed as to readily enable the con,- tents of the container to be poured therefrom. A yet further object of the invention is to provide means for engaging the creased edges of the paper container and to provide means for insuring this engagement. 1
Still further objects of the invention reside in the provision of a holder for either of the two principal types of paper containers now generally used, that is, the containers with the half pitch top and the containers with the flat top.
Yet other objects reside in the provision of a holder for a paper container that is strong, du-
rable, highly efficient in operation, simple in con struction and manufacture, capable of being readily and easily attached to and removed from a paper container, easy to manufacture, capable of being made from a variety of divergent materials, and which is relatively inexpensive. 7
These, together with the various ancillary objects of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this paper container holder, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way of example only,
wherein: Y I
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a preferred form of the invention in operative placement on a half pitch top container; 1
Figure 2 is a view taken substantially along th line 2-2 in Figure 1;
Figure 3. is a partial end elevational view of the invention; and
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing another preferred form of the invention for use with a fiat topl container.
With continuing reference ing drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral i0 generally designates a alf p tc p conta ner wh ch is illustrated to the accompanyin phantom to more clearly show the manner in which the first preferred form of the invention can be secured to this form of container.
The container holder is preferably made from a light metal such as aluminum or aluminum alloys but may bereadily made from any other metal or from suitable molded plastic material. The device consists of a base 12, preferably square in shape, which may be readily positioned over the container in an encompassing relationship therewith. Riveted, welded or otherwise secured to the base 12 is a handle member l4 which is riveted or otherwise secured to a first creased edge engaging member It. The member I6 is formed with a hook portion H3 at one end and an arcuate bifurcated portion 20 at its other end. A second creased edge engaging member 22 having a central portion formed with notches 24 therein is so positioned that the bifurcated portion 20 of the first member I6 will engage the second member 22 in the notches 24. Furthermore the member 22 isprovided with a-hook portion 26 for entures 28 and 30 respectively in which there is engaged a spring 32 which continuously urges the hook portions 18 and 26 into engagement with the creased edges 33 of the container Hi. When it is desired to remove the holder from the container ,I 0 it is merely necessary to press the finger engageable portion 34 of the member 22 thus tensioning the spring and separating the hook portions l8 and 20 thus releasing the holder from the creased edge portions 33.
Another form of the invention is shown in Figure 4 wherein a container 40 of a flat top design is shown. In this form of the container unlike the form of the container shown in Figure 1, the pouring spout is in the corner of the container making it highly desirable to provide the handle portion 42 of the holder at a point diagonally opposed to the pouring spout of the container 40. The base 44 of this form of holder is similar to the base I2. However, the handle 42 is welded or otherwise secured to the base 44 at one of the, corners thereof rather than at a midportion of a side. The handle is secured at its other end by spot welding, riveting, or any other suitable means to the first member 46 of i this form of the invention which is provided with I a hook portion 48 for engagement with the 3 therefore formed in the hooked portion to permit the corner to extend without. A member 46 is further provided with a bifurcated end portion 52 and an aperture 54 to facilitate engagement by the spring 56 which is otherwise secured to the second member 58 within the aperture 60. Notches 62 formed in the second member 58 provide means for pivotally mounting the second member 58 relative to the first member 46. The hook portion (54 of the second member 58 is also provided with a recess 66 therein so as to permit the corner of the container 40 to extend without. A further recess 58 is formed in the member 46 so as to permit the pouring spout of the container 40 to be more easily opened. Similar to the operation of the device shown in Figures 1, 2, 3, by merely pressing the finger engageable portion 10 downwardly the hook portions 64 and 48 will be separated permitting the removal or emplacement of the paper container holder.
Since from the foregoing the construction and advantages of this holder for paper containers are readily apparent, further description is believed to be unnecessary.
However, since numerous modifications will readily occur to those skilled in the art after a consideration of the foregoing specification and accompanying drawings, it is not intended to limit the invention to the precise embodiments shown and described, but all suitable modificai tions and equivalents may be readily resorted to falling within the scope of the appended claims. Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
