LUG-STRAP SUPPORT.

This invention appertains to novel means for connecting the sweep stick with the picker stick of a loom and the primary object of the inwention is to provide novel means for connecting the lug strap of the sweep stick ith the picker stick in such a man t a the lug strap can be readily adjusted on the picker stick without the necessity of forming adjusting holes in the picker stick, which tend to Weaken and lessen the utility thereof.

Another object of the invention is to provide an adjustable lug strap support embodying a cult for receiving the picker stick, novel means associated with the cuff for engaging and supporting the lug strap and novel means for adjustably clamping the cuff in the desired position on the picker stick.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel lug strap or support for the picker stick of the above character, which will be durable and efficient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.

lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings:

in similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A indicates a picker stick which can be of the usual or any preferred character; B the sweep stick; C the lug strap connected with the sweep stick and D the novel means for adjusting the connectmg lug strap C with the picker stick A.

The lug strap C is ofthe conventional form and can be made from leather, canvas Or the like and is of a substantial U-shape in plan for embracing the said picker stick ant has its terminals thereof riveted or otherwise secured as at 10 to the sweep stick.

The improved means D for connecting the lug strap C with the picker stick embodies a cud which can be formed of cast metal or the like. This end is of sufficient size to receive the picker stick and the side walls 16 thereof are adapted to snugly engage the side face of the picker stick, while one end wall 17 of the cult is adapted to projectbeyond one edge of the said stick.

The end wall 17 can be provided with a suitable threaded opening for the reception of a hand or wing screw 18. which is adapted to impinge against a clamping plate 20. This clamping plate 20 is preferably of a wedge shape in order to conform to the tapered configuration of the picker stick and is adapted to be received between the side walls 16 of the cuff and the upper edge of the plate can be provided with laterally extending arms 21 for engaging the upper edges of the cuff to limit the downward movement thereof. It is obvious that when the hand of set screw 19 is adjusted, that the plate 20 will be forced into intimate con tact with the picker stick thereby binding the cuff in the desired position on the picker stick against movement. One of the side walls 16 of the picker stick is provided with an opening 22 for the reception of a suitable bolt 23 on which is adapted to be rockably supported a hanger 23 through which is passed one arm of the lug strap C. This hanger .13 embodies an arm 24 which is mounted upon the bolt 23 and a closed loop 25, through which the said lug strap C extends. This hanger is formed of sheet metal if so desired and the opposite edges of the loop 25 is flared outwardly as at 26 so as to prevent undue wear upon the said lug strap.

In the preferred form of the invention as shown in Figures 2 to 7 inclusive I provide a end 30 of substantially the same shape as the cufl' 15 for receiving the picker stick A and this cuff supports a hanger 23 for receiving the lug strap O of the picker stick D. The cuff 30 is adapted to receive a suit able plate 31 between the side walls thereof in order to conform to the configuration of the tapered face of the said picker stick.

In accordance with this form of the invention the extended portion of the cuff receives the pair of oppositely disposed

32 and 33 which can be in the nature of printers quoins. The tapered faces of the

32 and 33 are arranged in abutting relation and are preferably serrated to provide teeth 34, which can be in the nature of rack bars. One side wall of the cuff is provided with an opening 35, through which is adapted to extend a quoin wrench for engaging said racks of the wedge plates 32and 33. By the operation of the wrench, these

32 and 33 can be moved toward or away from each other, so as to force 1 the plate 31 and the remote end wall of the cufi in binding contact with the picker stick to hold the lug strap O in its preferred adju'sted position.

By this construction, the cuff can be readily raised or lowered for adjusting the position of the lug strap, in a minimum amount of time, and without the necessity of passing bolts and the like through bolt holes in the picker stick, which as stated tends to weaken the stick and lessen the utility thereof.

In Figure 8 of the drawings is shown a modified form of hanger for the lug strap and the hanger, as indicated by the reference' character 40 is adapted to be formed from wire and embodies an arm 41 provided with an eye 42 at its upper end for receiving the supporting bolt carried by the cuff.v .The lower end of the arm 40 is bent at right angles as at 43 and then upwardly as at 44 in spaced parallel relation to the main portion of the arm. The upper end of theportion 44 can be soldered to said arm 40. Disposed in spaced relation to the arm 40 and the parallel member 44 are U-shaped supporting

Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention, but:

What I claim as new is:

1. In combination, a picker stick, a lug strap therefor extending about the picker stick, a cuff receiving the picker stick arranged above the lug strap, a depending hanger rockably connected with said cuff receiving a portion of the lug strap, a plate engaging one edge of the picker stick received in said cuff and a pair of opposed wedges received in the end for engaging said plate having their inclined faces arranged in facing relation and provided with rack teeth to permit adjustment thereof toward and away from one another.

2. In combination, a picker stick, a lug strap therefor extending about the picker stick, a cufi receiving the picker stick arranged above the lug strap, a depending hanger rockably connected with said end receiving a portion of the lug strap, a plate engaging one edge of the picker stick received in said cuff, a pair of opposed wedges received in the cuff for engaging said plate and cuff having their inclined faces arranged in facing relation and means for adjusting said wedges.

3. In combination, a picker stick, a lug strap therefor extending about the picker stick, a cufi receiving the picker stick arranged above the lug strap, a depending hanger rockably connected with said cuff receiving a portion of the lug strap, a plate extending longitudinally of the picker stick for engaging one edge thereof having an inner inclined face formed to the con figuration of the picker stick and an outer face in alinement with the vertical, a pair of sliding quoins received in the end for engaging the vertical face of the plate and cuff, and means for adjusting said quoins, as and for the purpose specified.
