Description
Feb. 6, 1940. P. D. TRAVERS PLAYGROUND SLIDE Filed June 17, 1959 WIWI//I//'I//f/ INVENTOR. Para Z D a vera,
BY W L" AT RNEY Patented Feb. 6, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT oFEicE This invention relates to improvements in all metal playground slides, and more particularly to the construction of the side rails for the slide which will be formed to receive various thicknesses or gauges of steel bedways, and the pro` vision of novel means whereby the opposite sides of the bedways will. be securely and rigidly clamped to the side rails so that the portions of the side rails which engage the upper surface of the bedway at its opposite sides, will form tight joints so that it will be impossible for the dress material of the children using the slide to besome caught between the bedway and the side rails of the slide.
An object of my invention is to provide an all metal playground slide having cooperating metal side rails adapted to receive steel bedways of various thicknesses, and said side rails su'iciently flexible, so that when a'plurality of locking bolts arey placed in the side rails, the tightening of the said bolts will cause the side rails to seat on or contact the adjacent upper surface of the steel bedway in such a manner that line contacts will be effected so that there will be no possibility` of the material forming the childrens clothing catching in the slide as they use the same.
Another object of my invention is to provide an 4 improved all metal playground slide which will combine side rails and an interchangeable bedway, which may be of various thicknesses, to-k gether with means spaced along the side rails, whereby the said bedway may be tightly clamped to the said side rails.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawing which forms a part of my application,
Figure 1 is a sectional view taken on the line I-I of Figure 2;
Figure 2 is a sectional View taken on the line 2 2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a perspective View partly in section of one of the side rails;
Figure 5 is a perspective view partly in section of one of the clamping rails adapted to be received in one of the side rails, and
Figure 6 is a perspective view partly in section of the bedway plate.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawing to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out my invention, I provide an all metal playground slide which Will include a pair of oppositely disposed side rails anda pair of coacting clamping rails received within the side rails and being suitably secured therein, together ,with a steel bedway plate which will be iittedk between theside rails and clamped thereto by means hereinafter described.
'The side railsl 'are of inverted U-shape, as clearly` shown in the drawing, and when in position form parts of the slide, their outer side arms 2 being slightlyy longer'than the inner side arms 3, thereby providing adjustability and iexibility.
An elongated U-shape'locking plate 4 is received within the inverted U-shape side rail I adjacent-v its lower end, and is adapted t0 bear against the inner surfaces of the side rail arms 2 and 3, the lower end of the said locking plate or clamping rail being extended across the space-between the terminal ends of the arms 2 `and 3, and is conof inverted U-shape, and is adapted to be re-r ceived or positioned within the clamping rail 4, and has Yits lowermost end resting on the upper vsurface of the portion 5 of the rail ri, and also is adapted to have an edge contact with the adjacent end of the rbedway plate 6.
are adapted to receive the threaded locking bolts IEI, which may be readily inserted through the elongated openings II and I2, formed at intervals along the oppositerfsidesof the bedway plate 6 and in the portion 5 of the clamping rail 4, while Washers I3 will be employed next the head of the bolts III, and a cooperating nut or nut strip I4 having a series of spaced threaded openings are provided for the threaded ends of the bolts, whereby tightening the bolts will cause the several parts of the side rail to flex until the bedway plate is firmly clamped in position forming a line Contact with the adjacent portion 'of the side rail. Therefore, it will be seen that due to the exibility of the several parts forming the slide is being used. Cross braces l5 will be used to support the bedway plate B and reinforce the same, and are positioned between the elongated openings Il in the opposite sides of the bedway plate 6.
It will be understod that I do not intend to limit myself to the specic construction described and shown in the drawing, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A side rail construction for playground slides including an inverted U-shape flexible side rail, the outermost arm of said side rail being slightly longer than the inner arm thereof, a perforated locking and clamping plate supported in said side rail adapted to Contact said locking plate and having its lower side extending across and beyond the lower ends of the side rail, a bedway formed with spaced slots along its edge adapted to be seated on the upper surface of the lower extended side o the clamping plate, threaded bolts placeable through the slots in the bedway and clamping plate adapted to be screwed through the upper portions of the locking and clamping plates, and a nut strip having a series of threaded openings adapted to coact with the threaded bolts, whereby the tightening of the bolts will positively clamp bedways of various thicknesses in position.
2. The subject matter as claimed in claim l, and the inner side of the inverted U-shape side rail when clamped to the bedway being adapted to seat down on and Contact in a tight line joint on the upper surface of said bedway.
